I going to weld stainless stell pipe were he metal thickness is 2.4 mm (3/32"). I´m used to having straight edges not chamfered but on this task the two pipe edges are both chamfered and the gap is 3mm (1/8"). Im not used to this. I figure alot less amps than I´m used to as i´m used to no chamfer and little or no gap.Any suggestions on amps?Tungsten Electrode Diameter: 1/16" (1.6 mm)Filler Metal Diameter: 1/16" (1.6 mm) Thanks
Reply:55 to 65 would be a good place to start. But if you have an 1/8 gap, you should have 1/8 filler. That gap will be hard to fill with the small filler you are using.
Reply:That's alot of gap for only a 3/32" wall thickness, with a bevel, no less!!  Is this an open root joint too?   I would go with a 1/16" gap...MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:With that gap I'd find some bigger wire (2.4) and run about 75 ampsI'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:Thanks for all the input. I know the gap is too big. But it was mounted that way and they want me to do it as it is.I´ll take a bigger wire and start with low amps.
Reply:with stainless you really should purge the inside of the pipe
Reply:I am with DESERT RIDER 33.With 3/32 thickness and TIG process no gap would be necessary with TIG.Need more info too.You are the welder you need to let whoever is in charge of this job that technically it does not make sense. My feeling is that someone that is on this job was told to have a gaap on pipe but the rules for this thickness of metal is not covered by the structural welding code other than it does diffreintiate between thin metals. I do not have time to look it up for you right now butfor this job i would purge the pipe as mentioned and TIG with 3/32 tungsten anduse .045 diameter filler wire. If they insist the gap be that wide you better tell them any purge will escape from that joint. Tigging in the field is always problamatic if it is windy.Remember if you are the welder on the job, YOU are the boss NOT a contractor.YOU are responsible for the weld ,the safety etc.,.It is a bad situation if the person that hired you is the boss.Of coarse I have seen a major chain resturant roof being welded by high school students with no training. Contractor knew nothing. NOTHING.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
