Like the title says anybody have some good tips on running fluxcore wire verticle up. Any specific weave patterns i shoud do or just run a straight stringer. ThanksYa gotta spend money to make money!
Reply:i just did this yesterday in class. its the same as vertical up with solid wire but depends on the joint type. t-joint?  flat?heres my vert up flat on 3/8 with dual shield flux core, 75/25.not the best. i hate flux core with a passion but it passed. dont mind the restarts, the electrical grid at our school horrible and would rather trip a breaker every few minutes than let me get an edumacation.the camera makes it look worse than it is.
Reply:Straight stringers seems to be best. Less chance of trapping flux. I point straight in or slightly uphill. I will try to get some pictures tomorrow.Last edited by Spaulding Metals; 03-27-2009 at 11:25 PM.

Reply:I would run it like 7018.  As hot as you can,   Weave is ok, but don't whip.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Fluxcore vertical up depends somewhat on the type of wire.  Is there a specific product you're working with, because my recommendations would vary depending on what you're using? In general, you can run stringers or a standard z weave.  Some wires, like Coreshield 8 or XLR-8 or NR-233 work best with little or no gun manipulation.  Others will run as David R says, 'just like 7018'.Regardless, you can't step up quite as much when weaving fluxcore as you can with 7018.  Or at least I find that the bead ripple gets too coarse with weaving uphill and taking large steps up.  You really nee d to focus on staying at the leading edge of the puddle when weaving, otherwise you risk trapping slag or getting lack-of-fusion into the base metal.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:From your pictures, I would go a little faster side to side.  Pause on the sides so you don't get wagon tracks/undercut.  It looks like you're jumping up quite a bit each time you move up - maybe jog back and forth side to side a little faster to get a better layered bead.  Cheers."A winner isn't someone who doesn't lose, a winner is someone who doesn't quit."
Reply:Took another look at your photos and original post.  Caught that you're running FCAW-G, 75/25 shielding gas.  What voltage and WFS were you using to make the weld in the photo?  Did you change settings any for root/fill/cap?  How hot was the plate when you ran the cap?For the root, what were the root face and root opening dimensions?Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:here is the same weld but with .035 solid wire, 75/25, on the 220v machine.
Reply:Nice welds, what were the settings jcrazyjj ?Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:i believe i was running 18.5 - 19v, not sure on the wire speed.
Reply:Here is .045 Triple 7 dual shield, 24.5 volts 300 IPM wire speed. It lays in there like your using a caulking gun, stringers with no weave.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I think this is just GMAW.. it's been a while since I did it, and I didn't label it... But I know it was 3G.. I think this is an FCAW pic...I know this one is... It's labeled!! LOL  3G FCAW..  But I think that the pic above is the same thing just different angle pic...I was told to use one stringer for root pass and then weave the rest...  but each instructor and each job may vary, so it is good to know how to do both.  But to me, I had best success with weave even 4G...
Reply:.035 on GMAW and .045 on FCAW...Sorry for the poor pics..My instructor when I was in school could weld everthing in every process even underwater welding.. So I valued his opinion.. .  He showed me a something to help have consistant 3G welds.. Grip the gun like a bat with one hand.Take your thumb and put it on the backside and point it towards the end of the gun..Then rotate your hand left and right all the while moving up.. and where the "V" or bevel is at picture your thumb sliding in that groove...and never leaving it.  as long as you can keep your thumb/hand moving straight up and down, and rotate left and right you should be able to makea decent consistant 3G weld with a weave...Hope my explanation made some sense... it's a lot easier to understand visually...
