I purchased the shotgun in a broken condition. It looks like someone has already tried to weld it but did not get any penatration so the welds broke again. Is there a way I can use my MIG to put a couple of quick spots on this so it sticks? Suggestions? My $120 Mig - Harbor Freight 151T 220VMy $300 Plasma Cutter - Rattler 40A  110V/220VCurrent project (Miata Trailer):http://www.lightweightmiata.com/trailer/
Reply:I'd use a 1/4" 7018 set at 300 amps and let er rip. Couple of nice beads on both sides aught to do it.
Reply:You would be better off taking that thing to a gun smith and have it done right!Last thing you would want to do I imagine is cause it to warp or something like shrink the barrel and have it explode on you cause of something getting jammed in it!#1. If you don't like what I wrote, or if it offends you, then don't read it!#2. I am living life the way I see fit, if you don't like the way I'M living, tough sh**!
Reply:I wouldnt dare weld on that !  Try to get another barrel
Reply:Bugger that!Only way I'd even consider it is to braze/silver solder it and even then I'd be pretty cagey about doing it, in fact I'd say scrap it looking at what has already been done.I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:I believe most vent ribs and things of that nature are silver soldered,a gunsmith can tell you.pro-level dumpster diver                                     Hobart 125EZ
Reply:That barrel is now SHOT!    Time to buy a new/replacement barrel.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:I play cards with the chief of the po-lice. He's done that to a couple guns before. Course he was drinkin at the time.
Reply:That looks like it may be soldered, and for a reason, I had once begun taking a course in gunsmithing and after seeing what came during the first lesson, I did not have the fortitude to continue, go see a gunsmith...Ok
Reply:i think if i had that problem that thing would become a pistol!only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:Would have to believe that a barrel takes a lot of pressure.  Nothing but a long cylinder for a fast moving piston.Have ya considered a sawed off??Last edited by farmersamm; 03-28-2009 at 12:34 AM.Reason: forgot smiley"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:You're joking right?   Come on, a man with one eye and half sense wouldn't dare mess with a  gun barrel.  That's because the man with one eye and half a brain learned the hard way.Send it back to the mfgr and have them inspect it for repair.  Then see what they tell you.  I'd be willing to bet they would tell you to put a new barrel on.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:If you don't mind playing Russian Roulette go ahead and weld on that thing, otherwise just go buy a new barrel or let a gun smith fix it.  That way your family has someone to collect from when you are dead.

Reply:You cannot weld hardened steel. The result of welding is shrinkage. The barrel will not be round anymore. You can get yourself killed or injured and maybe anybody around you.Just like you do not weld on some truck frames that have been hardened. The weld will just break right off.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 03-28-2009 at 03:58 AM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:The WINNER, and STILL CHAMPION: COMMON SENSE!!! That barrel is scrap metal. With the right work, it can be tigged, but you STILL need a gunsmith to machine bore it back to true. Most shotgun barrels can be bought for about $50 to 75 dollars. Just to touch the barrel, I would charge you more than that. You know the moral of the story here....measure twice, cut once!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Buy a new barrel.
Reply:I remember seeing a shotgun barrel once, that looked just like this: There had been tiny bit of something inside the barrel. It was donated to the Hunter's Education department in Va after it killed the owner."To tell which polarity to use go to the bathroom and pour some water down the drain. If it runs clockwise use straight polarity. If it runs counter-clockwise use reverse polarity. Or if it just gurgles use alternating current." -RandomDave
Reply:just buy a new barrel, normally that would be brazed or silver soldered on and the entire barrel would be heat treatedimproper heat treating on that or weak metalurgy from mixing it with welding rods is fine if you like metal in your face

Reply:I'll bet that was more like the wrong choke installed or something.

Reply:Indiana doesn't have a Rifle season for deer, but we do have Shotgun season, its illegal to use buckshot all that you can use is deer slugs in a shotgun, that is unless you are going to use a muzzle loader of which is also a legal firearm for use during shotgun season, and what I use!#1. Reply:rmcelwee,I am just wondering what brand and model that barrel if from; is it a currently manufactured model, is the company still in business, is it some older imported 'no name' company, or something else? From the little I can see in your photo, it might have originally been 'projection welded' at the factory. That's a fancy kind of spot weld, using 'special' equipment I don't have in my garage. A good gunsmith should be able to clean off the small weld already done and silver-'solder' the parts back together iff no serious damage has already been done to ithem, but the cost may be greater than the cost of a replacement barrel from either the maker, or perhaps a used parts house like  Numrich Gun Parts below:http://www.e-gunparts.com/.
Reply:If the original part had broken off and not been messed with, then a gunsmith MIGHT have been able to repair it properly and safely.Once some monkey tried to weld it back together (see the original picture and notice the 'new' welds at the corners), all bets are off. It's not so much the welds themselves, as what the welds and the heat of the welding may have done to the dimensions and metallurgy of the original barrel.  Without some testing and analysis, like at least proof-load testing, the welded barrel is suspect and iffy.Replace the barrel.Besides, replacement will probably cost less than trying to have a proof test done!re: Shotgun and slugs.  Modern slugs can be fired through pretty much any modern 'regular' choke, except for something like an extra-full turkey choke.  Those 'rifled' grooves on a "rifled slug" really have nothing to do with rifling, but are there to allow some 'smush' space for the slug to pass through the choke constriction.  Sabot slugs accomodate the choke constriction by the plastic sabot deforming.  Accuracy may be affected from too much choke constriction and there may be lead or plastic wad/sabot build-up, but the slug WILL safely pass through the choke (except extra-full type chokes). An actual rifled slug barrel DOES spin-stabilize the slug, but the grooves on a "rifled slug" do not spin-stabilize the slug.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:I have restored some guns and have a friend http://www.turnbullrestoration.com that does it for a living. I am pretty sure what he would tell you is same as most others here have already said NEVER TRY TO REPAIR A CRACKED BARREL unless your an expert at it, have all the proper equipment and tools.Doug does a lot of work on restoring famous old guns.I can tell you right now it would be cheaper to replace the barrel if you can locate one.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.

Reply:Originally Posted by Ken DennisI forgot to mention that you can use certain calibers of hand guns for hunting deer here in Indiana as well!We don't have a rifle season they say because of the longer trajectory of a rifle like for example one of the most popular, a 30/06, the reason is because there are to many people living here in somewhat tight in areas! This does not mean that you cannot own a rifle, or shoot it for that matter, I used to have a Remington 700BDL in a 300 Winchester magnum caliber, talk about a gun that could reach out and touch, but the kick was so bad that you didn't want to shoot more than a few rounds before giving your shoulder a long break to recover!I also have a Marlin 336C 30/30 lever action, now that one I can't see why it couldn't be used here, as the trajectory isn't that much greater than a 3" magnum slug for a shotgun.

Reply:Yeah, trajectory.  Sorry if there is another interpretation that causes offence.I used to be involved with gunsmithing but have nothing more to offer this thread than has already been offered.  Since you don't need another recap I sought to say something funny.Got a welding ticket today and am too excited to think clearly.  Parhaps I will retire to the sidelines and veg awhile. Reply:I got it Nitesky . The 30/30 marlin is a weapon that I'd like to add to my collection. One of my buddies has one and it is a nice woods gun. I think the whole theory of the slug gun use was started in flatland areas where it is "safer" to have short trajectories. I'm as pro gun as it gets, and I'm not quite sure what I think about that.

Reply:Gotcha!I thought you might have been talking about the hand gun thing, I know some people get crazy on ya for just mentioning it, especially when your crossing the border into Canada, I had a NRA sticker on my drivers side window, and when the officer asked if I owned hand guns, I said: why sure I do!You can guess what happened next. Reply:Take that thing to a gunsmith to see if its still good.  He can silver solder it if its not ruined.  Looks a whole lot neater than those cold "welds".
Reply:i saw an old side by side shotgun that had got a dent about 3/4 of the way up one barrel. Eventually the farmer wore a hole in the barrel cause the shot wore out the bulge on the inside.they fixed it by brazing it and then, while it was still hot and molten, firing a shot through it so the inside was smooth. You couldnt see the repair from the inside.asides from that to the OP I wouldn't weld that barrel even if it were my ownG
