Reply:I have way too many questions to ask.  I was just curious how many people on here have done it.  It looks like it would be fun to do once or twice. My Babies:MillerMatic 185Thermal Arc 300SHobart StickMate AC/DC 235/160Dalex Werke Spot WelderOh and the wife and kids are important too!
Reply:I've worked with commercial divers welding underwater. I generally work as the standby diver and weld topside. I do a bit of underwater cutting. It's rarely done unless there are no other options. Usually we try to build a coffer dam and weld dry. Other options are to pre build patches and bolt them on to dry the area then weld dry. It's not something you can just learn by itself. You learn as part of the whole commercial dive class, including rigging, general inspections, deep dives, chamber techniques etc. Mostly if anything it's underwater cutting rather than welding.THIS IS NOT AN AREA TO PLAY WITH! One thing that happens when you burn rods or cut under water is that H2O is converted to H and O2. These can build up if they get trapped by an overhang or between 2 plates, and cause an explosion. I have seen one guy knocked unconscious when this happened, and another have the face plate on his helmet shattered. Luckily these were separate events. The unconscious diver was able to remain breathing because his helmet was intact until I could pull him out, and the other guy was able to increase his gas flow and turn face down so that he could continue to breath until he was able to get out. This is why full face helmets are required, as well as 2 way coms and backup divers.I am busy with some personal issues, but will pm you so you can reach me. I'll try and answer what I can.
