Reply:That was our first "trial" cook ...  just to be sure we preburned it properly and it didn't taste like oil.  I'm picking up a 65 pound pig today and it goes on the coals at 4am tomorrow ... Reply:That thing looks great.  I'm about to start basically the exact same project, except a little bigger.  Got a 700 gal tank for the enclosure, and the spit my cousin built plugs into a 110v outlet and spins at 1rev/min and creates about 200ftlb of torque.  It's pretty ridiculous, i'm pretty sure you could roast a full buffalo on it.  Post up some pictures of the pig you do, and how you attach it to the rod, etc.  When you're roasting, is the fire under the pig, or are you just stealing coals from a nearby fire?Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250

Reply:Thanks for the comments!  Hopefully nobody minds the pics I'm attaching of the pork on the spit.Motkrig - the motor I use is an old reduction drive motor with an old timing gear set to spin the spit.  It turns at 6rpm and the spit turns at about 2 RPM ... which I find is a bit fast.  I would like to get it down to about .5rpm  Sandy - I used high heat satin black bbq paint.  fired about a quart of it through a paint gun and it is holding up great.  Finished the deck with 2x8 cedar decking with a natural finish and dropped a set of old school bias plys on hotrod rims.MillerMatic180Miller 375 Extreme PlasmaOld but reliable O/A setupI'm a simple man. Reply:Looks great - I have that same problem with the flopping around.  My plan is to put a counterweight on the rod so that when the pig flops it's directly opposite from the weight, which will balance it out.  Also - I'm not sure about this one but I've heard that wrapping it in wire like that can make it taste weird from the galvanization burning off.  maybe that's only if it's in direct flames though - which it shouldn't be anyway.  Millermatic 135Syncrowave 250
