I started training a little over a month ago and yesterday was put on the vertical fill ins after breezing through the horizontals/. Im having difficulty with the "pretty" aspect. The instructor has told me the fill is strong but its very ugly filled with undercut and quite lumpy. I am running at a very low heat (about 80amps) and doing the 1,2 method used for normal overlapping stringers. But im still getting a massive amount of undercut. I have class again today in a few hours, hoping to get a few pointers to try out today.thanks.
Reply:Try Holding on each side a little longer. That may eliminate the undercut. Is this on Beveled Plate?
Reply:I assume you are using 3/32 rod at 80 amps? On 3/8 beveled plate? Crickertj is right to hold your edges longer, also if you hold them longer and are on 3/8 plate you can crank the amperage up to 90 with no troubles. Just dont get into a hurry and watch the puddle. When moving from side to side, the puddle will have a "tail" of red, when the tail catches up, its time to move. This is more so on the cap but its still good to know whats going on there.Good luck.
Reply:ok thanks guys ill try it out im on my way now. I will report back with how it helped.thanks again.
Reply:The most important thing to watch for is the filling action as you move side to side. As you move across you position your rod so that it is located slightly above the puddle left from before. You hesitate holding it there as the rod burns off and the metal rolls under the tip of your electrode filling the old crater. You then move across and slightly up to position your rod again slight above the old crater. You move left and right to a waltz timing ... left 2, 3 right 2, 3, left 2, 3, Stay two counts on each side and travel across the middle quickly. You will produce undercut it you move the rod too much right or left cutting into the base metal. If you return to the center of the old crater instead of above it then the molten metal rolls out in the front edge of the old crater causing a grape to be formed. The faster your waltz count the finer the weave and buildup. Some people move back and forth at regular music waltz rate while others move at double time but still hang for the two count at each side.
Reply:It went much better with the advice I was given...still a small amount of undercut but much much better then what i had. Thank you all. |
