I am looking at running either flux core or dual shield. I have a question about the polarity of the two. If the polarity of my welder can not be changed which one should I use. Either way, it will be .035 wire if this helps any. Thanks
Reply:what are you welding with it?????I like duel sheild myself but self sheild flux core is more economical(since you don"t run gas).I don"t think they make a .035 duel sheild do they??????so you may be stuck with self sheild flux core......duel I think the smallest is .045,then .052 then 1/16th.I could be wrong though. If it's too . get an office jobLincoln wp225g7 Lincoln 250 idealarcFrankenstein O/A set-up Weld-tech  tig set-upLincoln sp 175 plus profax  arc gouger
Reply:it will be mild steel. I am just looking to practice for my welding class.
Reply:hmmmmm they both run a little differant....just to practice I would do the self sheild flux core myself... like I said cheaper to run since you don"t need gasIf it's too . get an office jobLincoln wp225g7 Lincoln 250 idealarcFrankenstein O/A set-up Weld-tech  tig set-upLincoln sp 175 plus profax  arc gouger
Reply:Self shielding fluxcore would be the best choice for your use as it is most economical and easily obtainable.  You can buy it Home Depot or Lowe's for about $40 for a 10 lb 8" spool of .030 or .035 E71T-11 that fits most small mig welders.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I was just wondering, because right now I am running .035 mig with c25 and i did not want to do a bunch of swapping of parts. Is there anything other than wire that I will need to convert it? ThanksLast edited by mark123; 04-09-2009 at 11:03 PM.Reason: typo
Reply:Sure dual-shield could be used.  Some varieties come in 0.035 diameter on 8 inch spools for 'smaller' machines.Polarity?  Check the directions.    Different wires can run different polarities.  Lincoln Outershield 71M is DCEP (+), comes in 0.035 inch diameter on an 8 inch spool part number ED026804https://weldingsupply.securesites.co...EF:OR:ED026804But why are you looking to run a dual-shield wire?  The best laid schemes ... Reply:I don't believe it has a switch to change it, but I will check tomorrow.
Reply:I just bought some sweet .035 dual shield for 27 bucks for a 10# spool and it runs real nice on CO2 or 75/25. I welded up some 1" and 3/8" plate today making some brackets....Bob71T-1http://www.inweldcorporation.com/http://www.inweldcorporation.com/datasheets/E71T-1.pdfLast edited by aametalmaster; 04-10-2009 at 01:19 AM.Bob WrightSalem, Ohio  Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:sorry for the miss info I guess you can get outersheild in .035 I didn"t think you could.....dang I will have to go get some for myself then....I do alot of 1/16th and .045.I was looking in a lincoln book and it wasn't there for what I am used to running the 71 elite but I see now the 71M comes in a .035....now for you that have ran that how does that run compared to the 71 elite??????If it's too . get an office jobLincoln wp225g7 Lincoln 250 idealarcFrankenstein O/A set-up Weld-tech  tig set-upLincoln sp 175 plus profax  arc gouger
Reply:Mark,There usually isn't a switch to change the polarity.  You just switch the two wires inside the wire-feed area.  RTFM.    The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:the welder is a snap on ya205 it does not have a way to switch the wires. thanks
Reply:I beleive that the welder is made by century. If that helps any. Thanks

Reply:So at this moment in time, I am guessing, that I won't be able to run flux core in my welder. Thanks
Reply:In all likliehood, this is your welder.  It's made by Century.  Give these guys a holler, and see if they can shoot you a manual or some infohttp://www.centurytool.net/117_012_Y...der_s/1691.htmLast edited by farmersamm; 04-12-2009 at 03:23 PM."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Aw hell, I can't make the link work.  Go to www.centurytool.netAnd do a search for the ya205 welder, or Snap On YA205Sorry,  I suck at links"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:HEY DOOOD!!!!!  EDITED THE LINK, AND NOW IT WORKS!!!!No good at this link stuff, always have to manually type it.  And I'm too old and stoopid to learn how to cut and paste or whateverAnyhow yer good to go"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I was thinking, on that welder, there is a way to change it from 230 to 208, what if I reverse the up and down of the lugs, would that change it? Thanks I will get pics in a few minutes.
Reply:I think 208/230 range in the line voltage which is acceptable to the welder.  You don't need to change it.   I wouldn't mess with the input until you get someone on the phone at Century"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:The input voltage doesn't have anything to do with the output polarity.  Leave the power cord connections and input jumpers alone.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:back to the original topic, is dual shield dc also?
Reply:Wire feed is DC.TIG or stick can be AC, but wire is DC.Some wire is DCEN and some is DCEP, so check the label/manual/specs.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:I have a question, is mig neg or pos. I am looking to use 71T1, which is pos.
Reply:MIG generally DCEP, but it can vary with the wire I think.  I'm not a wire guy.Flux core is DCEN as far as I know.Get a damn book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:And I'm not sure that MIG can vary.  It might be all DCEPGET THE BIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:what is the bible? I have a welding book, it doesn't tell me much. thanks
Reply:Lincoln's Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding.  It has almost every answer to every question you could ask.  It's a GOOD BOOK.Don't take my word for it.  Most everybody looks to that book for advice if they're not fully experienced weldors, which I ain'tI hear it's pretty reasonable from the Lincoln website. Not crappin on ya, just trying to send you in a better direction.  You can't depend on advise from people like me.  Look at the real deal in black and white on the printed page."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:The Bible is Lincoln's "The Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding". Available at LincolnElectric.com. It's the best buy in welding.Mark123:I'm not a MIG guy either, but your first pic shows a gas feed to the torch. So, in answer to your original question, you can use either solid core MIG wire with gas, OR flux core without gas. There's no reason to be using dual shield at this skill level.Since there is a gas feed to the torch, there is very probably somewhere to easily switch the 'big' wires going to the gun. They may be marked + / -. Look closely, they might be 'cast' in the plastic insulators. Please stay away from the power leads in the back. Do you have a local welding supply that you could bring the welder to?Edit: Hiya Samm. Last edited by Craig in Denver; 04-13-2009 at 01:16 AM.9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Reply:If you're using solid wire and shielding gas, run it DCEP.Examples of solid mig wire are ER70S-6 and ER70S-2.If you're using self shielded flux cored wire (innershield) without shielding gas, run it DCENExamples of self shielded flux cored wire are E71T-11 and E71T-8.  Lincoln calls those wires NR211 and NR232.If you're using metal cored wire, fluxcore with shielding gas, or any other wire that doesn't fit the above 2 descriptions, consult with the wire manufacturer on the polarity to be used.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I didn't know the Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding covered wire?   I have Lincoln's New Lessons in Arc Welding, originally printed in 1940.  Mine is a 1978 edition and doesn't cover wire or tig, just stick and air carbon arc.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Sandy's post showed some wires that could be run both ways.  I don't know if their currently available wires, or widely used. That's the good thing about the specs.  It's there in black and white.I assume the chart applied to wire electrodes"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Gotta be wires, because the shielding gas was mentioned"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:The bible covers stick, mig, flux, submersible arc, ....... it's a pretty comprehensive book.  Deals with pulse, covers distortion, design of welded joints,  equipment...........Does just about everything but wipe yer butt when ya get offa the stool. It is truly the BIBLE.
