Hey guysDid a few welds today between work - here's 2 towards the end of the sessionI think they're getting close to acceptable nowDefinitely using thicker metal (this is a very thick flat bar - 9mm - near 3/8") with a 2.5mm (1/10") rod made my life a lot easier - no blow throughs! Working them at 120A-125A and the slag comes off real easyThoughts gents? Attached Images
Reply:The drag is looking good. Now try a slight side-to-side motion to define your toes.  This motion establishes the edges of the weld.  Comes in handy when you start doing fillet joints."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Flat stringers always look cold, but it can be misleading.  These look in the ball park, but see how the same amps run on something near 3/16" thick.  You'll see the beads flatten out a bit.  3/8 steel is already near the edge for smaller rod, and you start needing 5/32 rod at higher amps to get the heat into it."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Looking pretty good. Keep it up.Be sure and list the type of rod you are using so we know what it is. Different rods run best at different amps, so it helps to know what rod you are using..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Thanks guys. These are Speedex 6013's Will try putting some 'legs' to the welds when the weather clears up around hereI'm in a bit of pickle if I use the larger rods (3.2mm) 1/8" - I end up blowing the circuit breaker on my house's 10Amp circuit - even though it's a machine for 10Amp circuits. And the machine only has a 10% duty cycle so it's one rod at a time at best! I need a new welder and more electricityI can try up the amps a little more on these 1/10" in rods and see the penetration
Reply:The upper range for 6013 2.5's is around 90amps. You shoud be able to run those 6013 3.2's at about 120.  The upper range for those is around 130.oh, and it's 1/8 (3.2) and 3/32 (2.5) not 1/10.  I know its not exact in math, but thats what it is.Last edited by LarryO; 06-26-2012 at 04:37 AM.
Reply:Looks like you might be running a little too hot, there's a bit of spatter.  A good rule of thumb is to set your aperage is to take the decimal equivilant of your welding rod, drop the deimal point and set that nuber to your amperage. Example: rod that is .125" (1/8"), you would set amperage at around 125 amps, a .0625" (1/16") rod would be set around 63 amps. Hope that might help a little.Go hot, or go home!
