Not welding I know, I have Gouged alot at work with 3/8" rods and lots of power, but what is the least amount of power needed for the smaller rods for the home shop ?Will a 250amp stick welder work if I keep it to short cuts ?
Reply:If you do a search in General Welding there are some threads that might be helpful.I think David has posted some info on this topic
Reply:3/8 is pretty small in my book, 1/2" is standard issue and 1" is man sized. i would think 250 full bore is a minimum even for short swipes. all of the gouging i have done has been with 500+amp machines
Reply:1/8" rod and 200 amps will gouge.  Its a narrow curf (1/8"), but will do the job.  Make sure your machine will gouge.  Read the manual.  I use a lot of 3/16" or 5/32" rod with 250 amps on a 425 amp machine or my Ranger 250.Get some gouging rod and a blow gun.  Give it a try.  I did it that way before I bought the proper stinger.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I may try a 1/8" and a blow gun to see, if it does ok I'll see about getting a real stinger. It would mainly be used to remove a weld without cutting the whole part off... so yeah a small 1/8" rod would be all I would want to use...
Reply:Let us know how you make out.    It worksDavid Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
