Background:I am going to be tig welding thin wall aluminum for a company on an as-needed piece work basis. I am fairly new to professional welding; however, I have recently graduated from a welding training program and have been practicing tig aluminum for awhile now. I passed the companies skills test and this will be my first paid welding work. They want me to come up with a price-per-piece that I will be welding. They are going to provide all of the equipment and supplies. Questions:What is a good starting hourly wage for a new aluminum tig welder? Does anybody have any suggestions on coming up with a price per piece? Thanks for any help!
Reply:Im curious to see what people will answer, but i ''guess'' its based on the years of experience you have and probably mostly on the speed of your work.Calculator > Bevel Square
Reply:I charge $50/hr for Al work. By the reactions I get, I'm certain it's too low. But that same charge is applied to my time scrubbing horse sh!t of the trailer I'm fixing. But I don't weld for a living. Farming takes up most of my time. ---I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?wusnxiLincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A

Reply:As Dave mentioned it's kind of impossible to give you any sort of price because we have no idea what's involved in the work is it one simply weld, or are there a bunch of welds on one item? What's the fit up and prep like? Are they all CNC water jet cut or are the pieces hand cut in various lengths that are "sort of" close and covered in oil from the saw?Keep in mind if they treat you as an independent contractor and 1099 you, You'll be on the hook yourself for taxes, SS etc, and can also end up on the hook liability wise if there is a failure of the item you fab up. If you get hurt and are an independent contractor, then the injury is on you, not them as well. As he mentioned it's probably a stretch to call you an independent contractor, but many places today want to shift taxes and so on on to the next guy to keep their overhead down. One of the easiest ways is to list some one as an IC and 1099 them, saving on SS, unemployment, medical in the near future, workers comp, taxes and so on..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:This is in Hampton Roads Virginia, I am 26 years old. The company is making a new product and its a new part of their company so I think they are a little unsure of what a fair price would be. Does anyone have any information on what an entry level AL Tig welder would make per hour in general?Dave: Thanks for that information that is very helpful.

Reply:I would say it depends on the pay scale in Virginia. As for piece price, figure the time you xpect per piece and multiply that times the scale you want. If they are going to 1099 you then double it.
