I have just passed my 6g tig root 7018 fill and cap in the 6g position, and I'm a very happy bunny.  So I thought yeah the 6g is supposed to be the hardest position, you got to fill and cap with stringers while the pipe is at 45 degrees.  In all honesty and because I had some pipe at home I thought I would do a 5g.The root is tough, the hot pass and fill are ok to do but I am having some real problems with my cap.I think the 5g is a hell of a lot harder than the 6g.  Does anyone else agree,I was told that the vast amount of pipe welding is in the 5g position. Why oh why is the 6g the test for all jobs, when you will hardly ever come across it.
Reply:the universe is full of mysteries and this is one of them . . . j/k a lot of times places make you take a heavy wall on 6g as an endurance test.  I do agree tho a more practical test would be 5g. They say the 6g includes "all positions."  I say bs. you want all position then give all positions.  but hey them suits get it in their heads bout stuff, you an't gonna change it.
Reply:i would rather do 6g than 5g for a weld test just because of the very bottom of the 5g pipe sucks but if you plan on working the pipeline you will be doing more 5g than 6g just because most joints are welded out of the ditch then set in in 2 or 3 sections that have already Ben welded at least that is how we did it
