I am planning on doing something out of 2" square tubing with a 3/16 work surface and bottom shelf. Any tips? Am I maybe going about it in the wrong way? Just want to feel out what people here have done.Oh... and I will be transporting materials with a Jeep Cherokee. No pickup truck here, Whatever I buy needs to fit in that.
Reply:When you pick up the plate, you could get the shop to cut it in 2x4 ft sections, transport it, then weld it back up?  Or rent a trailer from U-Haul.
Reply:I should also point out that these are my target dimensions: 30" L x 60" W x 34" H. One car garage, need to keep it a little bit small and portable.

Reply:You might want to think about that height.  I'm only 5'11", but my workbenches are all at 37".  And sometimes I think they're too low.And 1-1/2" square tubing might be more appropriate for a bench with a 3/16" top.I transport big stuff in my old CJ7 all the time.  WIth the gate down, you could fit a 60" piece pretty easily.  I sometimes remove the passenger seat (four quick bolts with the older Jeep), which lets me haul 4x8 sheets.  It's not elegant, but it works.
Reply:I think my bench is roughly what you are wanting to build.  If you would like pics just say so and I will go out in the garage and take a few.  I need pics of the bench anyway to document my equipment.

Reply:I'll go right now.  Give me a few min to take pics and post them up.  I got to turn the lights on and get to work anyway.
Reply:Ok I am back.  Work bench is 24"x72"  1/4" top.  2"x2" square tube legs.  the shelf is 8" off the ground so I could get a broom under it, but if I was to do it over I would make it 12" off the ground so when TIG welding I could get my foot and the pedal under it.  Right now my toe hangs up on the shelf when running the pedal.  Bench is 36" tall, just a few inches shy of my elbows so my arms can move freely when welding.  Give me a sec to upload pics.  I hope they are ok, I have a cheapo camera.
Reply:I forgot to add that there is no bracing under this bench, so I do not pound on it.  Sorry for the wait, I figured I should at least clean the top off before I took any pics. Attached Images

Reply:30"x60" x 3/16" = roughly 100lbsmake sure ya have a bud around to help lift the sheet.Swivel casters on on fours legs makes for easier steering when ya gotta move it around.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
