A guy on eBay sells rod for a pretty decent price...... Even with shipping......I just ran across some 8018 rod....... Never heard of it...... Does it drag like 7018? Does anyone use it?http://www.ebay.com/itm/Welding-Rod-...6#ht_500wt_922Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:There are various XX18 rods. I use 11018 M and 12018 M1 (freebies from a retired weldor). The M1 runs the best for me. I've been told it's a military spec, but not what the spec is. Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A
Reply:Pretty good prices, shipping might be a bit rough.  8018 is just a higher tensile low hydrogen rod runs similar as does the 90.  11018 gets a little different, but not a huge step.Would be nice if he had some bigger rods at that price.   Same seller has 5/32 7018  same priceWhen any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, "This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know," the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives.
Reply:I've used some 8018 in the past. It has all the same storage issues 7018 does because it's an XX18 lo hydrogen rod. The difference being it's higher tensile strength."Cheap" rod sounds to me like leftovers from a job or 5 fingered discounts. Price looks ok, but 50 lbs of rod that needs proper storage is a lot of rod. I see a lot of waste if you don't have a need for a lot of rod all at once. Shipping will probably kill a lot of the price advantage..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Good point on the waste....... And I don't have an oven either........ Was just going to store them in the house thinking it would help...........It's just like going to SAMs and buying 5 gallons of mayonnaise for $6..... It takes a long time to use it all when you make one sandwich a week....... But dang it's a good price.......Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:If you wanted to go that route, I'd vacuum pack the ones you don't use in 1 to 2 lb bundles for storage. Of course this plus shipping ups the cost. For the "average" hobby guy that would be more than adequate for storage. For $55, I'd think about picking up a can if local and vacuum bagging the rods..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:With shipping it would cost me right at $90........ I doubt I could get 50 lbs of anything at my LWS for under $130.......I'm tempted and I like the vacuum idea........Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:I'm new to welding, so I don't know much about rod storage.  You can get little packets that absorb oxygen and/or moisture from the companies that do food storage stuff. Throw those into your vacuum bags for extra insurance
Reply:i worry about unseen damage..its not hard todrop a 50 pound box..and there goes a bunch of the rods, the flux will crack and break..id rather have a vendor local to return  them to..
Reply:That B2 rod is a match filler for CrMo pipe (1 1/4Cr/1/2Mo chemistry), and is very low hydrogen @4ML/100g. When welded to steam pipe & stress relieved for 1 hr @ 1250f it has good properties and very good creep strength. Welding 4130 will give you 90+ ksi coupons pretty reliably. That doesn't automatically make it a good idea to weld a trailer frames & such with it. For mild steel and other odds & ends 7018 or the 60ksi fillers are a better choice even if they don't have the same visual appeal.Matt
Reply:I'm surprised this hasnt been made a sticky, but this I show a rod is identified.Well use decals 8018 80 -tensile strength-80k tensile strength if welded proper1-position used- 1 meaning all position8-flux content- flux content and amount. 7018 up to 12018 runs typically the same, with slight variation. Typically as the tensile strength increases so does the chromium content, which make the puddle a little more "runny".Miller bobcat 225g  - spoolmatic 1Mm250 - 30a spoolMiller spectrum 375Thermal arc 95 Everlast Ex 250As the boiler turns, these are the days of our lives
Reply:The 18 serie of rod is known as a fast fill rod, unlike the 10 or 11 seriea( known as cellulose rod) which is a fast freeze rod.Miller bobcat 225g  - spoolmatic 1Mm250 - 30a spoolMiller spectrum 375Thermal arc 95 Everlast Ex 250As the boiler turns, these are the days of our lives
Reply:I got 50# of 3/32 Lincoln excaliber 7018 from wayfair.com for like 80$-85$ delivered to my door. They have free shipping on things more than 69$. Be careful though a lot of what they sell is terribly overpriced.

Reply:Thanks LarryO! I treat them like any XX18 rod, but feel the do run better.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A
