i'm looking into making a security door for my garage anyone have any pics of yours that you may have built to give me any ideas? Thanks It's not what you can buy, it's what you can build that matters
Reply:Are we talking about a side pedestrian door, or the big vehicle door? If the latter, is it roll-up or pivoting?
Reply:opps sorry, side pedestrian door It's not what you can buy, it's what you can build that matters
Reply:solid 1.5"armor steel. atleast.
Reply:Waaay overkill... 1/4" Formalloy 500 should be plentyOr maybe just plating a regular door with some sheet metal and beefing up the hinge and latch sides... I'm thinking after all that work that you store bought one would be the ticketCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:dont over-do the door. thieves here are using sawzalls to cut openings in the walls next to the doors..get electronics and a meanass dog...
Reply:And boobie traps like on Home aloneCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:There are many kinds of security doors now. They just advertise that their product is safe 100% and they often guarantee that it will work properly, but I don't think so. Almost the doors they are selling is not always safe and it can be broken by the thieves. So you must be careful , you should look for a good shop to buy the best security door.beautiful furniture
Reply:On mine,They unscrewed the tin and then ripped about 6 ft. off along side the overhead door on mine, after they tore a hole in the roll up door trying to open the latch on the inside of the door. Cut the phone lines, pulled the electric meter, too. I put expanded metal around the walls and fixed a 12 volt car alarm with lights and sirens. My dad always said "a lock only keeps an honest person honest".
Reply:I just use ADT. I figuered that was probably better than trying to outwit them or armor plate everything.
Reply:yeah we had em unscrew the bolts on the sheet metal and come thru a wall. sheesh. adt it was after that. pad lock the gates and they just come thru the walls kinda nuts! " All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream." Edgar Allan Poe

Reply:A quote from a friend of mine who worked in security for many years... LOCKS ONLY STOP THE HONEST THIEVES.... lolNever argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with years of experience.

Reply:Make your place look like it is lived in... lights on timers and also a radio on a timer is good. Talk radio is better. An alarm is good and test it regularly. Testing it makes sure it is operational and announces to neighborhood that it is there. I have motion detector lighting around my yard. Hedges cut low and good line of sight from street. My old man had an old bell alarm he made before electronics... it was not reliable and would go off at all hours of the night. He finally gave up and just did a test ring then left it off every Friday before he went home. He never got broken into again.

Reply:Mate of mine (plumber) had his shed broken into. He had his name etched on stuff thinking it would discourage them from taking things. It didn't. When he replaced it, he got a spray can of paint and liberally sprayed it on everything. The thieves came back, but took nothing the second time. Of course, the trade-off is that he now has tools with pink paint on them. At least they don't go missing on job sites.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.
Reply:All I did on my garage is put a piece of s/s around the door edge and mount the deadbolt and locketset thru it. I've got 6 s/s bolts thru it holding it in place. On the door jamb side it's screwed into the wall framework with 3 1/2" deck screws. The hinge side goes into the framework with the same amount of screws thru the jamb. Agree tho, locks are for honest people. On the garage door it's got an electric opener so it would be a bit harder to bypass that as the mechanism is attached to the ceiling...Mike
Reply:A lot of these situations sound like wood frame (garages) or sheet metal (sheds). But what about people with cement block construction? Surely there's still a weak point? My attached garage is CBS with one side access door (2 sided steel, wood core, opens out) and one 2-car aluminum and fiberglass panel door on an electric opener (standard design). No windows. What could I beef up?

Reply:I just picked up a sheet of 1/8" steel ($91 for a 4'x8' sheet) to make a door in a concrete block wall (crawlspace that needs to be secured). Using 1/8" angle iron to weld a frame in place on both sides of the entry, tie them together with 1/8" strap. A determined thief will go hot-wire my skid steer and tear a hole in the place anyway, but I don't want to make it easy for them.A custom fit door would have cost about as much as I have in materials and would not have been as robust, plus it is a fun conversation piece with my non-welding buddies.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
