purpose of different lens shade colors

thought I'd try a gold lens in my fixed shade hood. i heard something about they help light up your work better so i went with a #10 just like I used with a black one but it wasn't dark enough and gave me a spot in my vision. had to stop using it after about 5 minutes. what are the gold green lenses commonly used for? what about the green ones? were these designed for a certain process or...??

Reply:The colored lenses have compounds in the glass which mostly adsorb various colors and not as much others, so they appear the color of the light they transmit better. The gold coating mainly reflects light, nearly all wavelengths to the same degree, so what gets through appears the same color as the original source.The shade number reflects the percentage of what gets through, (no matter how the rest is stopped), and it is theoretically the same for all types.
Reply:I use a #10 gold for tig and short circut mig, but went to a #12 for fluxcore, spray mig and stick.I cant stand green lenses, I cant see out of them everything is so dark.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:A dude at work has a blue lens, # 10 I think. It's super clear, you can see everything. Kinda weird, though.
Reply:I think the gold lenses are cooler too - they reflect or don't absorb heat as much as the green ones do.  I think mine are shade 12, I use them for arc and mig.
Reply:Back in welding school and still to this day I use a shade #11 gold lens (the large size one). After one night of the green lens that came in my helmet and then trying the instructors gold lens.... I was sold!

Reply:when i'm working with pipe everything is ok when i'm behind the electrode but once it starts getting around the bend and i can see more of the arc i get a spot in my vision...  if I darken the shade any more it's hard to keep a reference point and overlap the beads properly... thinking i might try a green. haven't found any blue ones.
