How much do you mark up materials?

Reply:Are you just selling material to customers, as stock lengths or cut lengths?For stock full length I would go 30% at most, any more and they wont be coming to you for long, they'll find your supplier. For cut lengths I would use the same mark-up but add $5 or so for each cut in smaller material and $10 or more for heavy material or anything that cant be cut with a chop saw.
Reply:If you hold stock of popular lengths of square tubing, flats ,rounds and sheet and a cutting srevice too, you can go 50% + for all after hours supply...24/7 when the normal dealers are closed.Nothing like being able to guarantee getting a piece of square tubing on a week end for a project when the normal supply chain is closed up.Expand this to welding rods and other consumeables and you'll soon be into a small time dealership before you know it.....expand it further into delivery and you'll have a customer base.You won't be able to buy your materials at wholesale or bulk prices, but 50% mark up for pocket money isn't too bad.Ian.

Reply:Marking up to 50% more than the market value seems like gouging to me but biznes is bizness.  I would personally stay with market price and add $50-$150  p/u and delivery charge. Theres also the taxx issue when reselling material but I would avoid that route.
Reply:35% + p/u time at full rate...most of what we do is delivered anyway so not much p/u going on.  Most steel suppliers will deliver, some have a minimum order size, some don't.

Reply:MY standard on large jobs (for me large is 10t or more) I mark up 13% for bid work. For small jobs the mark up can go up to as much as 25% or more if the customer is asking for the moon. Free market is what ever you can get, remember one trip to the well will not grow a crop.
