So I got hooked up with a local shop to patch blocks that have had a rod thrown through the side.  They take me about an hour a piece.  The welds look better in person, I promise.  Here's some pics of a 5hp I did tonight. Attached ImagesMy name's not Jim....
Reply:And a 10hp also done tonight... Attached ImagesMy name's not Jim....

Reply:I take it you are fabing a new "patch" from scratch for these. Not bad. What sort of precleaning do you do to get rid of the heavy crud? Or does the shop take care of this for you in advance? To me that would be the time killer considering how nasty most small motors get.PM sent.Last edited by DSW; 02-18-2010 at 05:40 AM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I would also question the economics of doing this on a 5 HP engine.  However, it is certainly a worthwhile thing to do on JetSki-type engines.America Needs AMERICA'S Oil!!!"Global warming is the greatest scam in history ...There is no run away climate change. Reply:looks good as always.  What are your procedures?  preheat?  Filler/process?  Patch material?  I love looking at cast repairs.  Not everyone can repair cast, especially dirty cast.
Reply:great work what filler do you usewhat would be a fair price tohave that 10hp fixed
Reply:I get roughly $40 each.  I work hourly so if I have to build up an ear or chase cracks I get more.  The guy says he can't buy bare blocks anymore and short blocks are $200+ according to him.Clean with non-chlorinated brake clean.  I really wish I had kept my old dishwasher.  Wire brush and a burr for prep.  Pre-heat with MAP torch, tig with 4043, then set in front of heater for a slow cool down. It's not quite as professional as work Castweld does, but it works and the customer is happy.  He used to patch the small holes with JB weld and throw out the big ones.My name's not Jim....

Reply:I've done similar repairs on "crotch rocket" engine. At $1000 and up for the engine it's a worthwhile repair.  I'm also surprised this is worthwhile to repair on the small engines.  Are these something a little more special than your run-of-the-mill Briggs?Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE

Reply:Looks good to me. I usually use oven and charge 60-80 so thats a good deal for your customer. About 1 hr per sounds right. A356 or 4047 may be better but in those cases- windows- it is not necessary. If it throws another rod it will fail no matter how you repair it. 4043 is cheaper and what I use for like repairs. Good job.Peter
Reply:Looks good, I have a mower/small engine shop in GA, I have filled small small holes with JB weld and they have held up fine. However, I might have to try this for the blocks, like you said, that are not produced anymore.  It really is worth it to fix these to put on units that require the exact dimensions of these flat head motors (some pressure washers, chippers, etc.) as the cost of replacing the otherwise working unit far exceeds the cost of welding and installing a new rod.  I try to provide superior value to all my customers and this might just be another great way to do that.

Reply:Nice welds.  I too question the profitability of repairing small engines such as this.  I myself have welded numerous crankcase from 2 cycle polaris atv engines and snowmobile case as well.  Engines such as these are expensive and do justify the repair. Espically when HF is having a parking lot sale where you can buy their 6.5 hp horz. OHV/ Honda clone for $90! I have picked up 7 of these engines over the past 2 years and have sold them all and not one has had a problem.  Even bought and sold a 11hp with recoil and electric start for $270.  Runs just like a Honda

Reply:I guess I would offer the customer the option that I will save you the rebuilding costs and put the money in modifying the unit to accept the newer, better engine.  You will get an engine that starts easier, runs smoother and quiter, and has a low oil shut down so this rod throw doesn't happen again.  I guess I haven't seen a piece of equipment that can't be modified espically when talking about a piece of equipment powered by a 5hp engine.  Its not like a motorcycle or new snowmobile where the chassis is built around the engine. Did Honda make engines vertical flathead to fit some equipment or did equipment manufacturers make their units fit honda engines?
Reply:The thoughts and considerations might be different if Boostinjdm had taken on the chore of repairing grampas ancient rototiller or 'whatever it is'. But he didn't. He took on the task of repairing a hole in a case of a small engine at an agreed upon cost that the repair shop is happy with. I think he's doing one hella job at it too. The final cost of the repair to the antiquated 'whatever it is' may very well end up being three times the cost of a complete new 'whatever it is'. Boostinjdm doesn't know about that. That's between the rapair shop and the end customer. Great work, thanks for posting Boostinjdm.Well said Sandy.  I fix the blocks he wants me to fix.  Whether it's cost effective or not is between him and his customer.  You got to remember that lot's of people out there don't want modified stuff.  They want it repaired and as close to original condition as possible. There are some applications where OHV just isn't an option, period.  Like go kart racing.  Many of the classes are built around specific 5hp briggs blocks.  That's going to be my next call, I know a few engine builders in the area and I'm sure they have some holy blocks needing repair. My name's not Jim....
