anyone ever hear of a flux that can be applied to the backside of a stainless weld instead of a 2nd argon line to shield a tig weld ? someone i know was told it exists, i never heard of it. trhanks.
Reply:I think what you want is called solarflux, just type it in the search bar...maniak
Reply:Yup solarflux, but only use it if you have to.  It makes an ugly mess on the backside.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:heat sinks do a pretty good job of preventing sugar on the back of a fillet weld. aluminum, cooper, steel whatever you have lying around
Reply:I use Solarflux on my exhaust pipes on the butt welds. Mke sure you get it off the face of the weld as it will wick to the surface and make welding difficult and ugly. And make sure the fit is tight. If I am careful and go slow I find I can weld without Solarflux and not get sugar on the back side. Takes some practice. Learned that in school when taking tests. Just make sure you use enough filler to cool the weld dont just dab the filler, feed it.Most of the welding I do is 16ga 304 tubing using .045 filler for the butt welds. On tee type joints I use .062 filler. Amps are  set at 45 to 50 on the butt welds. Keeps me from over heating the weld.It works for me.mm135HTP Invertig 201 With water cooler9" Southbend LatheLots of hand tools.
Reply:Also worth a note is that Solar Flux is available in more than one preparation.  The one for SS is Solar Flux B.
Reply:thanks to all for the help
