I have upper & lower links for our off road comp truck to build. (4 link, triangulated uppers & parallelish lowers)I have 4130 material, 2" lowers 1/2" wall & 1.75" uppers 3/8" wall. These will be tapped one end to to tack a Johnny Joint with the other end having a weldable bushing (DOM) at chassis end.My question is with regard to the welding of the bushing being two different material types. Can I use ER70s mig wire to do the job with some pre & post heating then wrap/cover ?Or do I need to go a higher nickel wire like Ni81 or similar.thanks in advance, brooksy
Reply:The 70 series wire would be preferred due to the lower propensity for cracking after dilution with the 4130.
Reply:generally 4130 is welded with 70 series wire, If tig welding you would usually use 70-S2.
Reply:What condition is the 4130 in?http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:Everything is new & all surfaces are prepped & linished (sp?). End of tube has 30*- 45* prep down to 0.090"- 0.120" land, so prep area is just below 3/8" deep. The links (well the 2" lowers) will be subjected to some hard hits & sliding on rocks but not continuously as the race truck is built for Winch Challenges here in Australia. Combination of speed/navigation & climbing out of creeks. I had heard that using mild steel wire is the go due to having better elongation properties, does this sound right ??brooksyLast edited by c44f; 07-13-2012 at 05:44 PM.

Reply:OK, my bad. It is super early in the morning here.Materials was cut from full lengths that I have in my rack. So I guess you could say in "standard out of the factory form ???"The links will not be treated at all & left in there current conditioning as they will be more than strong enough for the job.I don't have spec sheets as the steel supplier is a well known high end stockist & all forms of motorsport use this supplier. I have been using them for builds for over 5 yrs so had no need & our current offroad governing bodies don't require material specs at this stage.Sorry but does this help ??In the past I have only used Hollow bar for link material which has been used mainly on Rockcrwalers. This faster style of offroad competition I am relatively green in the building outside maintenance on them. This is my first major build in this style & the owner is not taking it lightly with throwing a good amount of $$$ at the rig to close down the failure issues that can plague competitors exposed to this style of racing.brooksyLast edited by c44f; 07-13-2012 at 07:40 PM.
Reply:Just checked writing on material, it has condition "N" on the upper material 1.75" & I can only guess the 2" (lowers) is the same as it was unfortunately left on the floor & I had water come through the shed after a bad wet season earlier in the year & can't read.brooksyLast edited by c44f; 07-13-2012 at 08:03 PM.

Reply:I have ER70S-6 Cigweld Autocraft wire currently, so this will suffice & I will give the links a bit of preheat & then just cover ?thanks for the input, appreciatedbrooksy
Reply:Take pics if you can, really interested in more details on this type of racing too!Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.
