is there a cutting stick which leaves no slag?
Reply:Plasma?
Reply:haha its an old trick but crank up the old machine and throw a 6010 in there. When you refer to stick i assume you mean carbon arc gouging? Their isnt a "stick" out there that wont leave some sort of slag behind. Cleaner cutting methods such as stated above, plasma, plasma gouging, laser cutting, water jet etc.
Reply:carbon stick + compressed air will leave slag?p.s.: is there someone who has used something like this stick (esab ok 21.03)http://products.esab.com/Templates/T041.asp?id=55090what about slag?Last edited by bennett; 06-05-2009 at 05:04 AM.

Reply:Now he's got me curious.  This is the first spec I've seen for a cutting stick that isn't a carbon arc.  I have used a 6011 cranked way up in a pinch but according to ESAB's info, copied below, this rod is made for it.  My first thought is that there is no way it can be used, then welded over without any further prep.FROM ESAB'S SITEOK 21.03 is designed for gouging, cutting and piercing mild and alloyed steel, cast iron and non-ferrous metals, with the exception of pure copper, using standard welding equipment. The electrode can be used in a wide variety of applications, such as bevelling, the preparation of cracked areas before welding and the back-gouging of root runs. The arc is struck with the electrode perpendicular to the workpiece, after which the electrode is pointed in the direction of travel at an angle of about 15-20°C and pushed forward. Gouging speed 100-150 cm/minute depending on the depth of the groove. Deep grooves can be made by repeated gouging. Welding can follow without further preparation, but, when gouging in stainless steel, a thin layer with increased carbon content is obtained and it should be removed by grinding. When using OK 21.03 indoors, it is necessary to have very good ventilation or fume extraction.
Reply:yeah, 6011 have some serious kick @ 230 amps
Reply:I've ordered esab ok 21.03 next week will arrive and I'll test them
Reply:Whether any slag is left depends on the base metal, the rod, its manipulation, and what you consider slag. Often a thin layer of tightly adhering oxide can be formed even with plasma, and it should be removed before welding; does that count?A number of companies make rods for cutting or gouging; years ago I bought some MG 570 but don't think I ever got around to trying it.[Since I wasn't sure of the number anymore, I did a quick Google search and found the following passage about it and MG560 on another site:]Posted at http://yarchive.net/car/welding.htmlFirst is their collection of cast iron welding rods and MIG wire (!).Yep, you can MIG cast iron.  They list 3 rods that can be used with AC,a bare rod that color matches gray cast iron, and amazingly enough,a rod that can be used to weld oily or burnt cast iron or weldsteel to cast iron (MG-289).  One application shown is welding a steelplate over a hole in an engine block!  They also list a gouge/Vee rod(MG-570) which in one pass will prep the crack for welding. Then there is the cutting rod, the MG-560, which they claim willcut as cleanly as an acetylene cutting torch.  I used a predecessorto this rod and it worked as advertised.
