Hi allI'm pretty new to welding and have moderate experience in MIG and TIG but lots of experience in stick welding.I am also heavily into bicycles.I want to build a rack similar to the one above.I've bought the material and I am hoping to get some advice on how to bend the 10mm rod.I have a stick and TIG welder but no oxy-acetyline outfit at this stage.I bought this 10pc pipe/tube/rod bender which uses a manual rachet to bend the rods.Any help on how to bend and whether I should TIG or stick would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Reply:Seriously with everthings you mention here, you seem to be able to deal with this project!TIG or Stick ? depends on you, i think you'll get good result with both of them, you say '' have moderate experience in MIG and TIG but lots of experience in stick welding''you are your best judge, TIG (if you are good enough) will give you clean and strong welds on this small material, Stick maybe will need some sand paper disc grinding and give you good result to!you already bought the small tool to bend your stuff i can't see where are you having issues ?Calculator > Bevel Square
Reply:Thanks LOMI have a few queries how I might hold the rods to the bar while trying to tack a weld.Any suggestions?
Reply:i don't really understand what ''rods'' you talk about ? are you talking about the steel material or the welding rod ?If i had to make this thing i would probably go this way: start on a flat small steel table, draw the layout of your first part which is the rack made of 10mm round bars, layout bent bar outline first and then the others inside ones equally divided, then cut you materials as the size of you layout, put your material in your layout and tack everything, do the same thing for the vertical part and then you only have two parts to put together with a L framing square. now for the legs that will be bolted to the bike, i've never done that kind of thing before but my first idea would be: take your first part (the L shaped rack that you just done) fix it to your bike as its shown and then take your measurment directly on the center of the wheel where its bolted to where you want on the rack, make those legs (cutting, drilling) and fix it directly on the bike, you will avoid mistake this way! hope you understand everything of my english hehe!Calculator > Bevel Square

Reply:It looks like most things bike related, aluminum! It looks anodized too. I made a custom cargo rack for my bike with aluminum round 10 mm (3/8")material for the frame and 1/8 by 3/8 bar for the basket. I don't know much about stick, but I have enough experience with tig to bumble through it! I can send you more detailed pix if you pm me. Reply:another thought that is too late for this project but next time maybe would be to use something likehttp://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-ca...tubing/=icfzblseemless carbon steel tubing instead of rodcheep and light weight
Reply:To help hold the pieces maybe these may help. Quite a few guys here like them. "MICK" posted about this and I ordered a couple. Small and work well. Amazon was the cheapest when I purchased.[ame]http://www.amazon.com/Magswitch-MAGSQUARE-150-MagSquare/dp/B007Q6YPVG/[/ame]

Reply:With my idea you can easily make your project without oxy ace torch (what you said you don't have) and also you don't need to buy any others tools of what you already have! just saying.Calculator > Bevel Square
Reply:I went with some of this. It was easy to source and very cheap.http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-ca...tubing/=icfzblThe stuff I bought is 12.7 OD and with a 1.6 wall thickness. Now I can still arc weld this stuff right?
