I'm in the middle of building a carnival high striker game. This is the deal where you hit it with a sledge hammer and it rings the bell. This one will be used indoors so it's only 8'. I didn't have a bell. I thought about using a brake drum or the end of an old cylinder... but despite my scrounging I couldn't find anything suitable. I wanted a bell that would ring when rung so I made one from scrap. It is good and loud. Nothing too critical, I had about 4 inches of 8 inch heavy pipe so I started there. Added some plate, a mounting pipe, a star and a rooster  It had to be fun.I then made the base from the handles of a thread mill I was given. Tomorrow I'll finish the upright track and mount the wood face.Need to have it done by Saturday so don't get me too side tracked on design changes Picture 1: Pipe faced and beveled.Picture 2: 0.25" plate welded on. Picture 3: Drilled out the center for a piece of pipe.Picture 4: The completed bell.Picture 5: The base. Very stable. Attached Images
Reply:I get the bell (cool) and the base... but I don't see the impact disk that you hit with a hammer nor the level and slider system that sends a striker up to hit the bell.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Looks like a fun project.  I like it!(Retired) Professional firefighter, amateur everything else I try to do...Oh yeah:  Go Big Red!   (You know: one of the 12 members of the Big 10 cuz we left the 10 members of the Big 12...)
Reply:Made a little bit of progress today. Can't spend the entire day on toys. No welding today... just machine work  Drilled, tapped and counter sunk the slide rail. Installed the slide rail on 1" pipe stand offs. Installed the upright support bolts. One of my employees brought in this cool wood mallet to use. Looks cartoon-ish. It will be great.Still need to make the weight and finish the lever. With some luck it'll be painted by noon Picture 1: Drilled the rail and the square tube previously. Tapped for #10-24 screws. Used the Tapmatic for this job, very fast.Picture 2: Counter sunk the holes using a drill/countersink. These make nice clean countersunk holes with a rounded edge.Picture 3: Installed the rail with pipe stand offs.Picture 4: Cool mallet along with the rail installed onto the base. Attached Images
Reply:I finished the high striker game on Saturday. Didn't have time to paint it before it was needed. About 50 or 60 kids tried it during the carnival. They had a blast trying to ring the chicken. As you can see from the photos it has been modified from the original design... due to it getting bent up during testing. This made it a mad dash to get it fixed and loaded into the pickup on time. I don't have it completely dialed in. The pivot point needs to be moved about 2" to make the gamer easier. Also, the wood striking plate broke after a bit. I might replace the steel arm with a wood 4x6. If anyone has any ideas... I' have a year to fix it. Attached Images

Reply:Man would I love to see plans for this.  Even a diner-napkin sketch would be great.
Reply:Let me get this straight......You are making something that people can hit with that big wooden sledge with the objective of launching a piece of metal at your ****(male chicken).

Reply:It would be tuff to work out but nice if you had a few selectable pivot points. It could be set for little folks and big folks that way. Or maybe be able to move the bell down some when you want. Of course sooner or later you'll have to paint the the old power meter up the post!! "The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:...Well, the bell has to be painted red, of course.....  I've seen and used these things in various fairs and amusement parks...seems there is usually some sort of springi-ness or rubber 'bumper' in there so the hammer doesn't work too well....if everything is solid and tight...guys (and girls) can ring the bell too easy... ...some of these I've seen use a big truck leaf spring for the teeter-totter part....black spray paint hides plenty of the details...Dougspair
