I have only been welding a little over a year or so and just got the Hypertherm 45 this past spring. So, I have seen these in the Cabelas catalogue and thought they looked neat. Those ones are made from 14-17 gauge steel and $50-$80 or more. I was in my local steel supplier and saw a ring sitting in the corner. I asked how much and the guy said, "how about $20." SOLD!This is 3/16" thick, 36 inch diameter and 10 inches tall. So, it's a little more robust. So, I found some clipart on the internet and printed off of the designs I wanted. My brother-in-law gave me some old truck mud flaps to use for the templates. I traced the design onto the mudflap and cut them out with a trim router.Next, I took the plasma cutter and cut out the designs. This was a bit of an issue due to the diameter of the torch head. I was able to trace the evergreen tree. However for the deer and maple leaf I had to trace it with a marker and then free hand it.I then cut 4 "feet" out of 2 inch square tubing and welded them on.I think my welds are getting betterI debated about whether to paint it or just let it go rust. In the end, a can and a half of high heat Rustoleum and there you have it. I will have to post a photo with a fire going in it. I welcome your comments and ideas for improvement.Welder: Lincoln Weld Pak 15, .030 L-56 Superarc wire, C20 shielding gas.

Reply:Looks great. As far as improvements, get in the habit of not starting or stoping welds in the corner like you show in your weld detail. It's a place where cracks will start. Wrap the weld around the corner say 1/4" to 1/2" and then stop..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
