Well......It's heavy if you're the one pushing itBeen offline for a while, but still busy  (ISP problems)This thing is about 25yrs old, and the frame's past its prime. The old bolt tabs were ground/chiseled off, and new ones welded on.  I believe the wheelbarrow pan is maybe 18ga, and burnthrough was gonna be a problem.  To keep from burning thru with the fluxcore the heat was focused on the 1/4 flat while allowing the puddle to wash down onto the thinner material.Cross pads were then welded to the first pads to make a place to anchor the frame Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Next a new frame had to be made.I tried to copy, as near as possible, the old frame geometry by using the original pads as a template. The frame was then sighted in to make sure it was square with the wheelbarrow pan.  Then it was welded to the new pads Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:The front axle was added.Handles were made from 1" sch40 pipe.  The square pieces fit inside the square tubing, and the end piece is welded to the open end of the tubing.  The inner bulkhead is to relieve stress.  If all of the stress were placed at the very end of the square tubing it would possibly deform the tubing Attached ImagesLast edited by farmersamm; 11-01-2010 at 02:20 AM."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Glad to see your back Samm. Missed you here. Looks like you got yourself a new pup there too.  I like to weld the tabs on the leg braces myself so that the legs can't shift sideways. Usually the 1st thing we'd do when getting a new wheel barrow unless they wre the bolt on braces. We went to the plastic tubbed ones instead of the steel tubs since we do concrete. The broken stuff doesn't dent the Fk out of them and they don't instantly rust after the 1st use.Doc told me once I needed to get more cardio exercise.  I just looked at him and asked if he had any idea what I did for a living. He told me pushing a wheel barrow didn't count because it's weight lifting and doesn't get the heart rate up.  I suggested I bring him one of our 7cf wheel barrows and fill it with something "light" like stone rather than wet concrete and let him push it up and down the parking garge at a dead run for an hour and see if he though his heart rate went up... EDIT: BTW they sell steel handles for those things. I don't like them personally, but some of the guys do. The dia is just too small for me with all the weight in the wheel barrow.Last edited by DSW; 11-01-2010 at 02:20 AM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:The last thing was making legs.I copied the original leg angle, but used only one member.  2x2 14ga tubing is adequate to support most any load the original legs were designed to carry. As usual, it took more time than anticipatedAnother quality () job from Uranus Inc. Reply:I keep looking at the front wheel and the tub and some thing seems off for some reason. It might just be an optical illusion from the picts, the lack of the front brace over the wheel, or the fact your tub is probably a 5 or 6 cf one compared to our 7cf ones. It looks like to dump you have to get the handles way over center. I'll have to take a closer look at the ones in the shop tomorrow..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Nice save Samm.  That new frame shouldn't suffer the same fate as the old anytime soon.  Love the handle method.Who's the new QC Inspector?  Looks like he's helping to "eyeball" the frame alignment on the tub for you.Really good to see you back.  You've been missed more than you can imagine.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:what's that thing weigh now ? empty. Is it not going to be a little heavy loaded? Reply:Welcome back Sam! I thought maybe you were busy out in the fields getting the harvest in before the cold kills it.Nice restoration on the wheel barrow. Reply:Welcome back Samm. cute little helper you got.I think DSW is correct. It looks like the tub is too far back, resulting in your arms supporting all of the weight. If it was moved forward then you can balance the weight on the wheel. But the repair is good and HEAVY DUTY, just like I like it. Forget light but structurally strong, I want it HEAVY DUTY! BTW what wire are you running?Last edited by Stick-man; 11-01-2010 at 09:37 AM."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I hod pack occasionally for a friend who is a bricklayer, tractor supply had a sale on a true-temper plastic wheelbarrow so he asked me and I said sure about buying one, can't hurt on getting it clean at the end of the day, never used a plastic wheelbarrow before, worst $89 dollars ever spent, couldn't load it but halfway because it would flex and that means more work for me because I would have to make 2 trips to get mortar,so we just went back to the old mortar incrusted, bearings gone old raggety wheelbarrow in worse condition than the one Samm is repairing.Samm-I wish I had your wheelbarrow in some cases because of the terrain I had to navigate but how much weight did you add?You get a wheelbarrow full of mortar 3 inches from the top and it is pretty heavy by itself.Last edited by dugndeep; 11-01-2010 at 10:18 AM.Maxus Pro-125 MigChicago Electric 90 amp DC flux-coreLincoln Electric AC 225 tombstoneO/A torchM/O mini-torch10 acres of flatland15 acres of holler
Reply:add two wheels to the back and hook the dog to it
Reply:Good save. If the handle weight is an issue just add a counter weight out front of the wheel.

Reply:Very nicely done Samm.If added weight is a concern just cap the handles and install a quick coupler with check valve in each handle. Fill with Helium and you will have a racing wheelbarrow!

Reply:Looks proportionally correct from Texas according to the first photo of post #5 comparing the original handle on the ground next to the refurbished version. That thin wall tubing isn't going to add that much weight to the unit and will in fact provide for a "stiffer" feel under load IMO.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:I like the local "inspector" too. Looks like he's got that same keen eye and sense for detail that I have ..Good fix Sam. Nice and strong. Those handles will still be there long after the tube is rotted out. That's what me 'n the inspector think anyway. Reply:It's been quite a few years since I used this wheelbarrow, but it feels only slightly heavier than before.  I would imagine the greatest contribution to the weight increase (maybe 5lbs ) comes from the 1/4" flat, and the pipe handles. As far as geometry...........I used the remaining solid pieces of the old frame as a template, so all of the assembly is "original" as far as placement.  The wheel, frame length/angles, and tub location. This was never my favorite wheelbarrow of the two I have.  It's too big to fill to the brim with concrete without busting a nut when moving it.  Either that, OR I'M A WHIMP  I vote for "whimp""Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Hey Samm, I remembered to snap a pic of one of my barrows. To me it LOOKS like my tub is a little farther forward. Mine has wedge spacers in between the tub and the handles to raise it and move it forward. (That is unless it is an optical illusion???) That is what I meant in my last post. However, unless your hauling really heavy stuff, it shouldn't matter. Nice save anyway. I know your handles will outlast the wood ones ten fold!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Nice save Sam, You should have used 1/2 inch wall tube, just keep it as a loaner, when somebody asks  you say"sure I have a wheel barrow you can use, just don't break my handles" You get to see the look on their face when they grab hold of that baby,  and never help them put it into the truck,  How about dual wheel up front ,I have a plastic one that I don't care for the tub, but I do like the dual wheel."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
