I've always sandblasted my parts before tig welding. A welding salesmen was telling me that it contaminates the weld. I've never had any problems. Who's right?
Reply:sand blast then prep with alcohol or acetone only real is issue is if you blast steel and stainless with the same media it will embed the steel in the stainless and will rustMiller Xmt 350Lincoln Ln-25Ahp 200xSmith Gas Mixer AR/HTig is my Kung FuThrowing down dimes and weaving aboutInstagram http://instagram.com/[email protected]
Reply:Aluminum+Sand+TIG do not mix....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I have done it but was for equipment that has been sitting a long time rusting and needed a lot of work replacing wear panels and parts patching water trucks and pulls But that's stick and fcaw work on steelBut it is much faster than wire brushes on any grinder any day just have to blow out the abrasive when doneI have cleaned broken aluminium parts in a bead blast cabinet before zap never had a problemLast edited by killdozerd11; 08-06-2012 at 11:32 PM.Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ?? Reply:That salesman probably wants to sell you grinding wheels and flap disks. Sandblasting is great, especially if you want minimum disturbance to the surfaces surrounding the weld (other than making those surfaces a little rougher). Sandblasting is not going to remove material as aggressively as a grinding wheel or flap disk and will prep nice and uniformly without having to be super-careful. As other have said, just be sure to remove any media/dust from the parts before welding.
Reply:It would depend on the material and the blasting media.I've had to TIG steel, on parts that have been sandblasted for my powdercoater, to make small repairs before coating, and it was pretty rough, lots of contamination. How much surface are you blasting and welding? Sandblasting would be one of the last prep methods I'd choose because of the setup and equipment required. A grinder with a wire wheel is pretty easy.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools

Reply:If you are the welder don't seek advice from a "Salesman".
