Hi AllI am new to this site and have enjoyedreading all the info here --I used to build bicycles and used both tig and OA torches to do it-Here is a trick I learned to strip paintfrom bike frames --Using a OA torch I would set the oxygento a Really high oxidizing flame -( the torch will roar )then you just angle the torch in the directionyou want to strip the paint and the extraoxygen oxidizes the paint and poofthe paint is Gone--->I usually have the tip of the torch in contactwith the tube at a 90 degree angle -When done correctly there is no smokeand little smell -- (some sparks tho )--Then I use a wire brush to remove any ash that is left --Stripping bike frames with paint strippercan take hours of time and is very messyand toxic and stinks --Using this method of stripping painthas save me Lots of time -Give it a try --Jay--
Reply:You can also just leave the flame neutral and hit the oxygen to blow the paint off. Works pretty well as long as your paying enough attention not to burn holes in stuff.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:aircraft stripper ( the thick stuff ya paint on to apply..) is pretty awesome when heat isn't an option. like rims with tires still on them.. or around a wiring harness or metals with a low melting point. brush on- 20 minutes- brush off. beautiful.used torches and such before like that tho. works very wellhttp://kawispeed.com/ -moderator and tech deluxewww.myspace.com/trickortrack -cuz i have no life
Reply:i acquire a lot of salvaged steel whicj is always painted..been using torch for years to just burn off the paint..as you say just brush off the residue..
Reply:One thing to remember here, is that their are lots of cheap paint out there and it would surprise you how much of it still contains lead and other bad things. Make sure not to breath the fumes when burning the paint away. Reply:Hi AllI forgot to say that I use the smallest OAtip that I have and use the smallest flamethat I can use with out the the flame blowing out -- the tubing gets warm but not Hot --I also used to paint show cars and have used many paint strippers including aircraftstrippers --Here is a tip to getting good results when using stripper-put stripper on and then cover thestripper with Plastic wrap--This need to be done as soonas you brush the stripper on for best results --Jay--
Reply:i believe lead paint is considered to give off dangerous fumes at 500 deg F
