Weight Rack feed back?

I'm just a hobby welder never took any welding classes, my friend wants me to make him a weight rack close to this the picture added. without the dumble.1. How do I figure out what gauge steel and width to support 500lbs of weights?2. Reply:a very interesting question. i was watching a tv show about the titanic..an engineer made the comment"any idiot can make something strong, the idea is to make it just strong enough"that said, you can assume that most things that are marketed have an engineers input and stamp..so look at whats onthe market and go a little heavier if you want..
Reply:I just looked up that rack and found the these Dimensions, set up: (l) 120 cm x (w) 60 cm x (h) 90 cm or Legs 24" long, 36" tall, 48" wide.
Reply:now go into a store where you can buy it, and check it out carefully and you will know what the engineers say (so to speak) then build yours a Weee bit heavier and better. piece of cake Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. So YES you can own too many tools.
