I have a Lincoln flux core welder. I bought it in 2005. I have used it to guild mini bikes and go karts. I love this little welder and metal fab is one of my favorite pastimes. I have not used it since last fall 2011. I tried to power it up yesterday to finally finish a project I have been working on for a long time. Well, nothing happens. No fan, no hum, no spark.....nothing. Now....I dont know anything about circuits or testing, but I did try my best. All I have is a 110 tester. Literally just a light. There is power at all the switch terminals, the wire motor, to the fan, etc....I recently lost my job and I don't have funds to be buying anything new. Can I please ask for someone's opinion on where to start trouble shooting this, or what may be wrong with it.Any suggestions, advice,would be greatly appreciated.Thank you....Vince
Reply:The first thing you need to do is edit your profile (User CP at the top left of the screen to show us where you are located. Maybe one of us is just around the corner or across town from you and can help. If you can't figure out how to do this, post your location here but in either case only post the town and state. PMs (private message posts) can then be exchanged between you and someone nearby to exchange exact addresses and phone numbers if you both want to get together.The second thing you need to do is to post your welder's model, serial, and spec numbers so we can find an electrical schematic that matches your welder. I think Lincoln's website has the schematics and manuals available as pdf files. On the inside of the cover you may find a copy of this schematic as well. Maybe you can scan it and post it for us to look at. In any case, we are going to need to see the schematic for your welder. Since nothing works at this point, I would start at the very beginning:1. Is there power at the electric outlet? Check it by plugging something else in like your grinder.2. Is the power cord and plug on the welder ok? No visible damage? Electrical continuity between the plug and input side of the switch? - you will need an ohmmeter or continuity tester for this.3. Electrical continuity through the switch when it is on? If a 2 pole switch you will need to test both sides.4. Is there a main fuse in the power circuit? Reply:Yes on all that, and don't have the welder plugged in and switched on to see if there is power at the various points inside it....without knowledge of electricity you will get fried.I would try and locate a fuse as the first step in trouble shooting anything inside....the rest on the circuit board is way beyond you, even with a diagram or meter, but dirty contact points in plugs, switches and relays are another probable cause.....it could also be a case of moisture on the circuit board making it cut out as a fail safe protection by the manufacturer, and in that case if it's been stored in a cold area, blow some air into it with a hair dryer for a while.Even if an electronic screwdriver with neon indicator shows there's power at the the inputs and the switches are live, the final earth out may be corroded or just dirty.Did you get a light on the panel to show it's getting any power from the mains?
