I am a newbie to the TIG process and have a question out of paranoia. I am a pretty good mig and O&A welder. I need to do some welding on my scooter frame and am afraid of both distortion and burn through. Can someone help me out with the settings. I have a Lincoln Precision Tig 225. I need to weld a few threaded slugs/bungs into some drilled holes and some 1/4 in plate on as fender mounts.Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Reply:Use DC.   One amp per one thousanth inch metal thickness is the basic setting for a flat/horizontal fillet.  Adjust from there.   Concentrate the heat on the thicker of the 2 metals and wash the puddle into the thinner side.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:This probably goes without saying, but make sure to practice on some scrap tubing and materials similar to what you'll be welding on before trying it on your frame.  Once you get some confidence, then go for it.  Post some pics of your practice welds, and there are plenty of extremely knowledgable and talented folks on here that can help you fine tune your settings and technique. You'll find with TIG you have much more control than with the other processes.Let's see some pics of the bike!Work HARDER, not smarter! ------------------------ Miller Bobcat 250Millermatic 251Lincoln Precision TIG 185Hypertherm PM 600Hobart 135 HandlerOxweld 400 FlameMaster
