Hey;I got a tractor wheel that got a crack in it almost half way across. I figure 5/64 ths rod, DC - about 50 Amps and cutting some plate the same thickness to fix her up. that's my way. So, I would like contributions and ideas on this repair. tanks

Reply:WOW!, I've seen the effects of 'over-Inflation', but  that 'Dummy' was blown to 'bits' in the last test!Although I have a hard time believing that ANYONE could be 'quite' that 'stupid', I imagine that it does happen from time to time....  From what I've seen, Tractor and Heavy Duty 'Low-Speed' rims are OK to weld and fix ('sans tire' of course..), but I don't think I'd put a 'Fixed' rim on a 'Back-Hoe' or Similarly 'High-Stressed' piece of equipment that uses additional downward force on on the Tires and Rims due to 'Hydraulics', etc../Cheers,Miller Diversion 165120 amp Buzz BoxVictor Oxy/Ace Oxy/LPGSmith "Little" Oxy/LPGHypertherm Powermax 30Lot's of Misc. tools n' crap....

Reply:jreynoldswelding, That's excellent information which I'm sure will make people think. I didn't know of this condition and I'm pretty quick to heat up metal that needs expanding. I have never come across this situation, but I'm certianly glad you posted this video. Thanks.
Reply:Not saying that its safe but if you take the valve seam out it will let the gases escape and keep you from being blown to bits like that dummy. To be safe you should take it somewhere and get them to dismount before you weld on the rim though. Guy got killed acouple of years ago locally taking a blue tip wrench to a stuck lug nut.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.

Reply:Tire, and tube off...........I'd go ahead and weld it.Gouge out the crack with a grinder, fill it, then grind it flat.  Then put a scab over the top.Been running on a welded rim for over 14yrsIf you don't feel confident, get a new rim.  Peace of mind is priceless.  And I'm not being funny.  It's all a matter of your comfort zone"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
