Hello, I'm new to this site and I'm designing a gooseneck trailer for myself and need a bit of help. I'm trying to figure out if I should use 19lb or 22lb I-beam for my frame and neck.I need to know how much weight two 12" 19lb i-beams can handle without getting bent or broken. The span of each beam will be 27 feet.

Reply:A trailer with that kind of span, why are you using I-beams, (S-shapes) why not wide flanges? Are you planing on using a torque tube? You can always truss your beams, like in this picture. Northern Tool use to sell trailer plans pretty cheap. Reply:When you say span is that the the legnth from where the goose neck attaches to the deck back to the first axle or from where the goose neck attaches to the deck to the end of the frame.Dan
Reply:You may be trying to "reverse engineer" your materials. Rather than ask how much a beam will support..... Perhaps it might be a better move to decide what the maximum amount of load your trailer will be carrying. A few more considerations like the GVW, the GVRW, # of axles, dual wheels or single, etc. It's all got to work together.Post some photos when you get started. Thanks,HoboLincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.

Reply:Sorry I should have posted a bit more information in the beginning.Yes I will be using 12'' wide flange beam. The trailer will have 2 10,000 lb axles and I will be pulling the trailer with my single axle semi truck and will be loading more than 25% of load on the trailer's tongue.I will be placing my 17000 pound 16 feet long wheel loader on the trailer or 15-20,000 pounds of 25 foot sucker rod and all of the load will be in front of both axles. The span of 27 feet is from where the gooseneck attaches to the deck and to the front of the first spring hanger.I will not be welding this trailer, I have a good friend that has his ISO ticket and his b-pressure ticket and a big welding shop.Last edited by hiway53recycling; 08-13-2012 at 11:27 AM.
Reply:the link to the deflection calculator is not working.
Reply:I can't believe you can build your own trailer for anywhere near what one will cost new! Just the cost of paint always sets me back. I just paid $330.00 for paint for the inside of my dump trailer! You really need to buy these plans!http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...8241_200308241Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I think you'd be better off buying used. I sold my 42' Pro Trak with very low miles, great paint, brakes, rubber, and deck for $6800. It was only 2 yrs old. It even had the top rack on top of the gooseneck to put more stuff. Quite an impressive trailer. I got it at 1 yr old from a guy switching over to an enclosed(he pulled it with a semi) for $5000. Deals are out there, just gotta look around. It was ~$20K new
Reply:From what forhire has told me, i'm going to buy 22lb beam. The welder that is going to build my trailer has built 3 gooseneck trailers in the past 2 years, If I have any design flaws he will fix them. His latest trailer was a 30 foot with dovetail and pop up center, 21000lb gvw, 12'' 19lb beam. I don't think I need to buy a set of trailer blueprints.

Reply:The engineer just told me I need 26lb 12" wide flange beam. I got a quote from SWS trailers and they also said 26lb beam.

Reply:Those WFs are the way to go! A lot stronger than an S-Shape. It's all in the width of the flange!Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400 |
