Any thoughts on how to ID what alloy an aluminum casting is? I know there's certainly cast alloys that can be welded and some that don't weld well (my degree is in metallurgy) but am not sure how to id them in practice. I've looking at doing some fabrication work that would require welding on a cast AL automotive transfer case housing. (Borg Warner 13-45 case as used in 80's ford trucks)Thanks,    ~John
Reply:Blow a ton of money on an alloy analyzer or just weld it and see if it works...http://www.bruker-axs.com/xrf-aluminium-alloys.htmlWelding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
