steamfitters and pipefitters difference?

Reply:Within the trade the difference is in how it is Labeled on the members book..... Since I've been for a long time, mine says BTJ (Building Trades Journeyman) "Steamfitter" most of the newer members will say "Pipefitter".....As far as any difference on the job... There is no difference. If a hand can meet the requirements of the Contractor, he works right along side the rest of the Journeymen. I've been on jobs as a "Orbital Welder" and had other guys with me that were  - Pipefitters / Steamfitters / Sprinkler Fitters / Plumber / Metal Trades / etc.If you want to be a pipe welder, you can contact any United Association Local. If you strictly want to be a pipeline welder, you will need to contact a local that has a "Pipeline Jurisdiction". Some locals are "combination" (plumbers, pipefitters, refrigeration and pipeline) and others are "straight line" locals with only pipefitters and welders.A lot depends where your located, where you want to work and where you want to live when your between jobs....... and if a local has enough work to take in new members.Thanks,HoboLincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
