I've been building handrail commercially off and on for the past 15 years.I've always used a horizontal table for layout and fabbing rails. Thanks to a small inheritance, I'm opening a rail shop.To save space, I'm considering building a vertical table, 24 feet long, and angled back about 15 degrees or so. It would use 3/8 by 2 flat spaced every 8" c/c. There will be a piece of angle at the bottom to catch the top of the rail [I build rails upside down and with the bottom post to the right].Anybody used something like this?Know of any sources that I can look at for ideas? Thanks in advance for any help in this matter.Gary
Reply:Cograts on opening up the shop. You might post up your location i the user CP so that the people close to you know where you are to help you out. I have always built them flat as well. The only bad thin about vertical is that you will be reaching up for the top welds  and kneeling down for the bottom.
Reply:A drawing or two might help. Interesting concept. I'll think about it.
Reply:You could design a table that will pivot from flat to vertical.... Similar to a welding positioner. This would be a space saver also. Mount it on casters and turn it up vertical against the wall for storage. In doing this you could set your tilt to a comfortable position.Just an idea.Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:Many years ago, I built rails on vertical rack.  I used to  tack every thing and then flip them to do the top.  However, you have to be able to walk around to do the opposite side.    Also, the framing/clamping got in the way when doing the opposite side.  If this happens the rails then has to be rotated-- three movements to complete the rail.  A 24 foot rail would  probably have to taken out the door to rotate. On a table I flip once and to the opposite side.  Good Luck,  interested in seeing what you come up with. 3/8x2 bar seem "flexy"-- 3/16" Angle would be better.  Angle (turned up) at the bottom assures you will have to rotate the rail to do the back side.I did the rotissery thing for painting fencing.  If you did it for a welding table,  it would probably remain vertical.
Reply:Here's a pic of what I'm thinking about. The plan is to put the rails together with 1/2" to 3/4" long welds just to hold it, then slide it off the jig and onto a set of tall horses to be welded out.I tend to be methodical - cut all the parts, cope them, tack all the rails together, then weld and grind them.
