I hope everyone had a blessed New Year! Wish you all prosperity and good health in 2011.This weekend my family and I were in Shaver lake, CA. Unfortunately for me I did not have a snow sled so I had to improvise.Yes, That's me riding a snow shovel. So I vowed to weld up a proper snow sled. I'd like to build one that is low to the ground and that is steerable. I was hoping that maybe one of you fine people have also built one and can give me some guidance/inspiration.
Reply:Never built one (and I'm from the "great white north"). You'll probably have trouble finding people that have because the stores sell some pretty amazing steerable sleds made from lightweight plastic. The kids are riding things more advanced than my first car.Unless you're some devoutly-DIY masochist, go to Walmart and buy one. You'll save time, sled will be lighter, work better and will cost less than the shielding gas you'd use building one.Lincoln AC225 & MigPak 140, Lincoln Magnum SpoolGun, Miller Spectrum 375-X Plasma, Syncrowave 200 TIG, Millermatic 252 MIG, Miller Digital Elite, General 7x12" horiz/vert bandsaw, 3' box/pan brake, 20 ton press, milling machine, 12x28 lathe, etc.
Reply:I have been tossing around that same idea for a couple winters now.I would love to see some pictures of what you come up with.

Reply:hopefully you had all the kids you wanted before you try that with the shovel again and use impact rather than friction to stop...LOL
Reply:Yowzer! That looks scarey. Hit a rock and you would be cussing in a high pitched voice... I like your idea of building a sled.(Retired) Professional firefighter, amateur everything else I try to do...Oh yeah: Go Big Red! (You know: one of the 12 members of the Big 10 cuz we left the 10 members of the Big 12...)
Reply:@Jake, I've got a couple of drawings so far.. I've found one that I like but like I said I'd rather build it myself.http://www.snowsleds.net/hammerheadabout.htmlI'm pretty sure that I can build it for a lot less.@Roadkillbobb & Strube1369, It actually was a blast! Where the handle is at it actually curves up, so you're just riding on your butt... no real danger to the family jewels. I certainly did attract a crowd.. most of who also gave it a go...
Reply:Looks like you have too many trees for one of these maybe. Cabellas' sporting goods sell them, or if your in Scouting, building one = a merit badge. The rule is the one who drags it up the hill gets the back seat (which can be like riding a spirited pony after someone just poked or slapped it's flank! ). I recall the first time my little brother pulled it up the and my best friend was the driver and deliberately steered a path that caught some pretty good air... Little bro. peed himself and we had to pull him home crying. I think he was about 8 or so...Matt Attached Images |
