Does anyone have any cool ideas for a welding project? My teacher told us to come up with one and build it, but I am really stuck on ideas. There isn't really a deadline, we have as long as it takes us to get it done. Anything fairly simple, as I am just starting out. Also I am artistic and a metal sculpture would even be cool to do.
Reply:& I will probably post pictures on here when I am finished
Reply:I wish i could help you but thats always the hardest part, thinking up ideas. How about chairs, stools, coatracks. Is their a limit on how big you can make it? Good luck! Have you searched on millers site, they have lots of different projects, designs.Ya gotta spend money to make money!
Reply:You might start with a look at this thread.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=39522There have been several other threads on this subject also in the past with a ton of suggestions. Once you have an idea, say a wine rack or candle holder, do a search using that and take a look at some of the projects people have done..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:Hmmm, metal scuplture you say?A large metal dragon sculpture?  http://www.lincolnelectric.com/knowl.../sculpture.aspHow about a scale model of the Statue of Liberty?    Oh wait, you're Canadian.  In that case, how about a metal sculpture of something Canadian.  A maple leaf, a large beer can, a hockey stick, etc, etc.  Hmmm, actually I kind of think a larger-than-life sculpture of a hockey stick all done up in sheet metal actually could be a kind of cool sculpture project.More seriously, think of something you like or need or just think is cool, and then make -that-.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:I really like that dragon sculpture. Perhaps I could do a smaller version of it, making something that size would probably cost way too much >.< but I like that a lot. The hockey stick is a cool idea too, very Canadian haha.
Reply:there's a project section where people post picture and discuss their projects.http://weldingweb.com/forumdisplay.php?f=10
Reply:Does your dad Bar-B-Que, build a pit out of two different sizes of pipe, offset from each other, with a fire box and or smoker, thats always a good one, do a Google search. Or something to heat your shop with, even yard art would be nice. Here are some pictures of things I have done through the years that may inspire you, the last being a little pit, I set on the patio, either to keep warm by or to cook the wife and I a meal. I used 1/4" plate steel, the bottom of an electric water heater, some re-bar for the legs and angle iron with expanded metal for the grill, hope this helps, please, please be safe and keep up the good attitude, you could run your own welding shop someday, you will go far, have a good one, Jeff. Reply:Oh, meant to tell you I'm half Canadian, not that it means anything though, live in Texas, really gets hot here in the summer months. Here is a picture of a jeep I rebuilt from the ground up, has a Chevy 350 engine bolted to a jeep trans. fun build, also a CNC plasma cutting machine I built. Not bragging, just wanted to show you what can be done, as young as you are there is no limit to what you could accomplish in your life, Jeff. Reply:My daughter made one of those concrete octagon concrete pads from the craft store. She did not know what to do with it. I suggested she make a table for next to the park bench. Here is what she did:
Reply:Hi,I'm working on an outdoor chair with this general shape.  It will have an outdoor cushion for the butt and possibly the back too.  Which would make the butt and back rests easy to fab.  The bending is the hardest part, but that's not too bad.  I bought the book "500 Chairs."  It's a great book for ideas.  I'm looking forward to buying the book "500 Tables"  Good luck and post pics!

Reply:Savannurs, im in the identical situation. I have been in a welding class for 2 years and everyone has been working on laying clean beads in any position. I have previous experience so my teacher had me move on to fabricating. So i have been stuck being the guy who does all the stuff that the other teachers want, so i just finished my 4th plow frame and have done many bumpers for trucks. So now i have nothing left but to use my imagination, and i want to make something over the top before i graduate.so this thread has been alot of help and post if anyone or yourself makes something really neat perferrably something modern . But a friend of mine built a beautiful flower pot holder that is an optical allusion to where the pot looks like its floating. It has a 3 legs that go into the ground and has a overwhelming hook that the plant looks as if it should be hung from it. But really there is a stand its sitting on that you cant see at most angles     my description is pretty useless, but unfortunately thats all i have to offer until jan 3rd when i go back to school. thanks Zach

Reply:for the winter seasons my lake is frozen!!!!! so ill be building a seat of goals, so i can get my notching with the porta band down. I read a thread about doing it and im going to give it a shot. i have a notcher to use but once im done wit the class i wont always have that fancy machine
Reply:I am moving into my first shop Jan 1. When I realized I was going to have my own work space I went out that day and bought pocket sized notepads and a sketch book. I carry the pocket notpad with me everywhere and any Idea I have no matter how small goes in there. Randomly through the day I will pull it out and force myself to come up with something, I will just sit there till I get something. You should be able to come up with something. It really helps to have a notpad ready.
Reply:Hi,I am a 1st high school welding instructor.I may be able to help yopu with some ideas. Can I ask, what do you think your skill level is?What type of welding process are you best at?Raymond
Reply:Honestly i dont want to sound conceded, but im probly one of the best students in the class. It is full of the "troublemakers". which i was a little more then a year ago until the gave me a second chance. So i have a new outlook in life. So i have done 100% of the work in this class and then some. we have you must knows for O.S.H.A. and a welding and construction book and i have done every question in the book not because i have to but because one day i just wanted to? But i can weld in every position in mig and stick and i can lay descent beads with the tig but im not impressed with my tig work. In my class we only have 1 aluminum tig and im pretty good on it but we also only have one mild stel tig and everyone is always on it so i have only built a mini motocycle out of nuts n bolts. ill upload pics when i go back to school. think of something very hard but not to long.... in the third marking period im putting a LS1 motor in a prelude with a muncie 4 speed with a m3 rear end or if im feeling up to it take my extra rear out of my supercoupe n make new a-arms.  i have built a min-mount frame for my truck..... i was given a pump and blade and i made a full custon plow for a land rover. and 2 other ones with just basic mounts so with those prodject i have done and will be doing now you see about the caliber im at
Reply:this is a honest example of how the class is everyone honestly sucks with a torch with a few exceptions and everyone is to dam lazy to grind and make things smooth and neat. and just a little exapmle of how bad some of these kids are i asked a kid to put a 1/2 inch tack on some thing with the mig while i hold it so he does and i look at it its all cracked and bubbly cuz this kid was welding for about the first hour of class with solid wire with no gas on.Last edited by himsa169; 12-25-2010 at 03:11 PM.
