Hey I have a small Lincoln 140 amp with an argon co2 mix. I'm having a problem where a little ball of weld collects at the end of the wire. When it gets too big, it drips down and the arc studders a little bit. I've have basically the same setup at work and I don't have this problem.. Anybody know what causes this?
Reply:Increase your wire speed until the problem either goes away or you develop a different problem.Check for dragging in the liner.Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:When I increased the speed it made the ball bigger and it welded to my contact tip haha. The ball seems to like the wire..

Reply:It could just be junk wire. The stuff we use at work is cheap as hell but it works. Im using Lincoln brand in my welder now.

Reply:Check the outlet you are plugged into. "Perhaps" the polarity is wrong. Something like the common (white) wire is hot. Black wire should be the hot one with white being common (not hot) and green being the ground.Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Reply:All good advice thanks for taking the time . Polarity in the welder is correct and polarity in the outlet is also correct. It's not a matter of technique because I weld on the same machine at work and don't have this problem. It got a lot better when I turned up the gas flow but it still does it. I think it is a wire tension issue. You can easily stop the wire from feeding by lightly pinching it. But no matter how tight I set it, it still slips. Here's a picture of the ball on the wire and a weld. That ball is ALWAYS there while welding.
Reply:move your nozzle and tip closer to your work.  you want to keep it under 1/2 inch more about 3/8 ths of  an inch.  You may still end up with a small ball after your welding, but I would keep turning up the wire feed speed till your welding is negatively impacted.  I would then turn it back down just tow where you are in the sweet of it.  I don't know what the amps and WFS will be, but on my machines there are those luxuries.  Just taps and a WFS dial.  I can assure you that if you learn to adjust your welding this way your will not be disappointed.
Reply:If you can stop the wire then the tension is off,it should push you finger away or right in to your finger.Point it towards a piece of wood and the wire should curl up.Do you have the roller set up to match the wire size?Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:The liner and the drive rolls are the first things to check. The liner may be kinked- pull it out and look at it; if it is not kinked, blow through it with compressed air to remove dirt.On the roller, make sure that the size of wire you're using is printed on the OUTSIDE of the roller (facing you).Another problem area on these little Lincolns is the spool tension. If it is too tight, the drive rollers will not be able to pull the wire off the spool. The older units had a tendency to tighten themselves during use. Also, any excessive tension on the spool gets worse as the spool is used up. Check frequently- there should be just enough tension to prevent the spool from overrunning when the feed motor stops.Lastly, over-tightening the drive rolls will actually make the problem worse by deforming the wire and making it hard to feed.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
