Hi all,I am new to this forum and I need help with something. I bought a tandom axle trailer on craigslist and the suspention was "fabricated" out of big masonary nails bent inward to attach the leaf springs to the trailer i.e. no equlizers. Now I'm trying to weld this square, any tips on how to do this?av8or
Reply:Get a tandem spring hanger and hardware kit from a local trailer supply. our buy one online. tell us what welding experience you have too. pics help a lot. gotta go get my popcorn for this thread now. the best advice is to take it to a pro for repair...Tiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:I got a suspention kit, leaf springs, u bolts, Ect. from Etrailer.com. My issue is there was no hangers on the frame to begin with. I can weld it no problem, I'm trying to square up the hangers. I have already cut off the old "suspention" so there is no way to take it to a professional. p.s. I've already tacked the hangers for the equilizers. Two plus years welding, no pics they are on my other computer that just crashed.thanks in advance,av8orLast edited by av8or4951; 09-23-2012 at 06:26 PM.Reason: added years of experiance
Reply:do you mean getting the thrust angle correct? just measure from the center of the ball to the point you are going to attach the front hanger... then mount the other one at the same measurementTiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:did you sent the equalizer hanger at the right point? most people do a 60/40 spread with the 60% being in front of the center of the equalizer (or center of the axle for single axle). There are no problems. Reply:Manufacturers of suspensions have prints that detail what measurements to use for any given combination of leaf spring lengths. Equalizer sizes are a second variable to the equation, and a third variable is the shackle link length. If there is any sizable mismatch, you could end up with components colliding together, causing failures. Here is another take on what I am referring to.http://www.etrailer.com/question-33224.htmlThe balancing point is at the equalizer mounting point, the middle hanger, (the theoretical center of the 60/40 split).City of L.A. Reply:Cut the tacks you put on and bolt the leaf springs to the axle. Have the hangers on the springs with the bolts in place but not tight, set it in place and clamp the hangers in place. Check all the measurements now and adjust with the clamps. Recheck all the measurements again. Weld it up and tighten the bolts down. |
