I'm planning to buy a new mig welder (either the Hobart Handler 190 or 210 MVP). The 190 is rated at 20.5 amps and the 210 at 24 amps. They both come with 6-50P plugs. The 230 circuit in my shop has 10 gauge wire, 30 amp breaker, and 6-20R. Is there any reason I shouldn't use this circuit with the new welder by using a 6-50P to 6-20P adapter?
Reply:A 20 amp breaker is standard for a 220 circuit, the amp draw you read on the two machines is when they are under maximum load, which both , double check this, should have an over load breaker or thermal couple to help control.10 ga. is limited to distance so be careful plugs are rated by amps so use a 20 amps plug.
Reply:Short answer- the adapter will work fine, perfectly safe.
Reply:I have to strongly disagree with the two previous posts. The breaker should be sized to make sure that the wiring can not be overheated. That said, the outlet currently in use is undersize and may be a fire hazard. To fix this you should either upgrade the outlet or down grade the breaker.Since you already need to change either the plug or the outlet, seems to me that you ought to upgrade the outlet.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:If my memory is right, the 6-50p is a twist lock. This is what works on a spider box. I like this type but at 20amps I would say its your choice . The adapter will work but you will still need to buy the female 6-50 and the male 6-20 plus wire. Female sockets are usually more xpensive than the matching male. Dont ask me why. If money is a concern, buy the male 6-20 and put it on your machine and weld. I would change the outlet to the 6-50p female but this option is gonna be about 3 or 4 times more xpensive. Again , females sockets are more costly than male plugs plus the upgrade to 6-50 amp compared to 6-20 amp.  The adaptor is good if you go on the road and need to adapt but not all 20 amp plugs/sockets are the same.

Reply:Your 6-20R receptacle is under size for your 30 amp circuit and needs to be replaced with a larger receptacle that can handle 30 amps. Since your new welder will have a 6-50P plug on it buy a 6-50R receptacle and replace the 6-20R receptacle with it.
