I'm supposed to head down and test and was told this week that 2 more(?) welders were shot and their rigs stolen. Anyone know anything about this? Guy said they were doing tie ins and found in the ditch. Can't find anything on the net about it, so its got me wondering. was'nt sure where to post, so if the mods need to move or delete I underdstand.
Reply:Wild, Wild West out there near the border....I haven't heard anything on it.But, considering the climate surrounding the border and our inability or desire to secure it...It's not surprising. There is a ton of money on those rigs... I know a guy who always carrys a commander sized .45 for just that reason. Welding, climbing, crawling, on his back etc.....He always has it on him.At least you can carry a gun in Texas to have a chance. Went to visit the Family in Md over the holidays and it's illegal to even have one in the vehicle in plain site. Let alone concealed.1981 Lincoln SA 200Miller Trailblazer 302gMiller 211 Mig Welder w/ AutosetI'm learning to stick metal together
Reply:Yeah, likely illegal smugglers/dealers. My Dad works out that way a couple times a year out in the field and they've got to keep an eye out. I would imagine a good alert guard dog would help notify you of anything approaching. Aside from that, have someone else out there just watching, or you'll have to keep your head on a swivel which would be pretty hard to do if you've got it under a hood trying to get a job done.Nothing really you can do except watch out for yourself. If you can carry, do it. don't leave it in your truck, put it on your hip. You might can give a heads up to the local authorities and the CBP that you'll have a truck at a certain location doing xx work. Sometimes they'll swing by to check.Lincoln AC225 and CartLincoln WeldPak HD and CartOne hand

Reply:If you will be down there, by all means carry. Have a backup, and whatever else you may need....Claymores come to mind. You are/will be very much alone. I'd probably have one on my person and an AR for backup in the truck. Scary stuff down there some days.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS

Reply:As mentioned it depends on where in Texas you are. FYI you can legally carry concealed in your vehicle as long as you are traveling and the state finally decided to define 'traveling' a few years ago "being in your vehicle for a lawful purpose'.There was a rig stolen off a job a week or two ago not to far from me, they found the truck (most of it) a few days ago - tools and machines are still MIA.The absolute best advice I can give for working near the border :::DO NOT go alone, always have someone to watch for incoming traffic.NEVER box yourself in, always have at least 2 ways out of where ever you are.ALWAYS try to have the high ground, if you see someone coming - unhook your leads and start the truck. It would be a shame to drive off with a few hundred bucks worth of copper on the ground, it would be even worse for someone else to drive off leaving you with a few cents worth of lead in your guts. If you see someone rolling up you can be ready to head out - if its an inspector, ICE, lost tourist, etc. then you are out a few minutes of time. If its a group of upstanding fellows from southern locals with a less than stellar grasp of our native tongue - haul A$$.Theres lots of good work on the border, you just have to be smart about how you approach it.
Reply:not sure Slim, thats why I was asking, brother and friends are in the Kenedy area, I'm headed out shortly, most of Conocos activity is right on the border though so I figure thats the area, called a mexican welder friend that lives down there and he said don't park my truck at a Motel either, takin my shorthood off and putting the new 200d back on, they steal it they'll bring it back. LOL
Reply:I would say pack a glock with a large capacity mag , I work in Kansas City Kansas and Kansas City Mo , i did a job at a motel awhile back , i had a extra person there paying them 20 bucks a hour just to watch the tools he literally sat around and watched stuff , i aint messin around, if u can pack , there have been more then one incidents where a person with a concealed carry came out on top in the last 6 months i know of here in the metro area. I for one aint gonna screw with the Meth heads , leave me alone and let me do my work or we gonna have problems so dont eye ball my **** lol oh and another thing i know its from china but if u ebay gps tracking device , it uses a simple cell phone sim card u can preload the prepay card and u call the phone number from your cell phone it will send u a text back showing EXACT gps coordinates of your tracking device , i currently have them on every welder and in the trailer in multiple locations , for the most part they are fairly reliable unless your in a location with crappy cell service then it can get kinda sketchy , but every little bit helps when were talkin about our livelihoodsI forgot how to change this.
