We had to fab up a few tank lids for a local gas supplier. After measureing, CNC plasma cutting and breaking in our press, I created a stamping jig for the main body. I grabbed up whatever I had laying around to make it. It took me about 30 minutes to throw it together and another 30 minutes to dial it in just right. All in all, the job set him back about 75 bucks a piece for a total of 6 lids. You can see in the example laying on its back in the first photo. Reply:Nice work! Was that one push each or did you jog the work back and forth a few times? So does the tooling get tossed on the pile, or do you save it in case another run is ordered?Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 01-30-2011 at 08:27 PM.
Reply:Very nice job !
Reply:Thanks.I just smashed them one time each.. I knew I had the right depth when I heard my welds cracking. Yeah, we'll bust the tooling apart and throw some of it in the trash.. We'll definitely keep the 3/8" plate for later.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:I never seen or thought of using a punch press for forming steel. I have however used pipe copers in the punch/iron-worker. Nice work.
Reply:You forgot to hit it twice with the sledge to allow for the lil copper tubing that always comes out the side.
