This is the first fab project I have done since I moved into my new house (with garage). The rest has been minor repair work. This was made from a single stick of 3x3x1/4 tube and some scrap 3/8 plate. Not sure what the plate is, but it's hard as hell. Junkman said it was some sort of weird armor plate, but since he did not know the analysis on it, he could not sell it as such. It's able to be drilled, but way harder than normal mild steel. I needed some stick practice, so I tacked it with 6010 and welded it with 7018. My old little Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 buzzbox worked fine after sitting for 10 years.Table after it was all tacked. PrimedPaintedInstalled in the shop. My buzzbox and MIG cart I'm building will fit under it when not in use. I have a 5" vise that I am going to mount. I'm just debating right or left side. I'm right handed and I'm trying to figure out which location will make me curse it's installation less.Last edited by Master; 01-30-2011 at 08:15 PM.

Reply:Why not mount the vise as many have with square tubing under the top? That way you only have to curse long enough to find a wrench.
Reply:I hope that it gives you many years of service. But I do see a slight flaw in your design. Welding the legs straight to the table, will allow the plate to bend and warp over time, if the welding didn't do it itself (considering the heat lines I see). A simple box frame with center support would have made that a rock solid table, especially for mounting a vise. But maybe it still will serve your purposes. I have made several tables, including one out of a slab of 2 inch thick material and giving it support is the way to go. A light tack, here and there, is all that is required to secure it. A nice piece of plate like that should be fairly true and good for a layout table if things are well supported.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Thanks for the feedback. I was debating using the tube to frame off a top, but kind of weighted the "this thing is barely movable my myself as it is" vice the "I'm going to be welding super precise stuff" argument. Table is going to be for light TIG use. Mostly dirtbike radiators, some slight fab work and such. The MIG and Stick are banished outside due to the spark/spatter issue with wood walls in the shop.E-2C Hummer PilotLincoln IDEALARC 300/300 TIG Welder Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 BuzzboxLincoln Weld-Pak 155 MIGForney (Harris Style) TorchesoooooOoooooWhen in doubt..
