Got a new spot heating tip, regs, hose, and some tanks today.  I'm setting up a propane fueled heating rig strictly for heat shrinking and bending.Flame Technologies #2 spot heating tip.  200,000-437,000btu's if my math is right.Victor WH370FC-V handle with flashback arrestors and check valvesVictor Series 350 regs and Type T hose for propane (Wrong hose was in cutting outfit box, have to exchange it in the morning, it's acetylene only)125cf 02 bottle (maybe 20 minutes run time max).  I figure I can always pull the other 125 off of the 0/A cart in a pinch.30lb propane tank without the new safety valve thingy (there's a new exception for industrial use).  This tank was a freebie from the LWS.The plan is to set up a dedicated propane fuel cart in addition to my existing 0/A cart.I kinda thought the goosneck on the rosebud was a little long, but they assured me that I would appreciate the length once I fired it up.  I don't have a clue, I've never used one of these before  My little acetylene rosebud looks like a teacup poodle compared to this thing Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Yeah, I curious about that too. I've thought a bit about a propane powered rosebud. I've got all the stuff sitting except possibly the torch handle and rosebud. One of the spare torch handles might be big enough but I doubt it..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Oh yeah, I have to check whether the propane regulator accepts larger diameter hose too.  I don't know if the coupling is different for larger hose or not.  Couplings may be the same for 1/4 and 3/8"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Farmersamm, I am wondering if you are going with this type of a set up instead of going to a homebuilt forge with some of the double or triple burner sets pointed down you could quite easilly make from a 100lb propane tank with top injection burners or even a larger square one with refractory, and that you would use propane and no oxygen. And by using some of the high efficiency burners/jets it can do comparable heating more economically. Also in this way you could idle the flame down to a pilot after you heat and procede with your bending, and not incurr the cost of additional oxygen. Are what you are using the large rosebud for to large for use in a forge?
Reply:Farmersamm is using the rosebud to heat shrink a section of trailer that is bent. Samm I've meant to say forever the heat shrinking thing is pretty neat and dang smart. It honestly never would have occured to me. Keep posting your stuff I live and try to learn every day thanks.
Reply:Thanks for posting that up about the flow sizes Samm.  Yes, let us know what you find when you try it, I'm very interested in your experiment.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:A long morningCalled Victor tech support this morning, and spent quality time at the LWS..............  The packing a diaphram in the current 350 series regulator will work with all gasses.  The difference AND IT'S IMPORTANT is the diaphram spring.  In the current regulators the spring in the acetylene regulator is weaker and will only allow you to put out 15psi.  The spring in the propane regulator is stronger and allow you to put out 30psi.  In addition, when we cross referenced repair parts at the LWS, we found that there is a different seat seal on the propane regulator.  Changeover from acetylene is gonna run around 7 dollars for spring and seat seal.  This applies to MY REGULATOR ONLY, AND MAY BE DIFFERENT WITH OTHER BRANDS, MODELS, AND YEAR OF MANUFACTURE.  If you care to, it is easier to purchase a dedicated purpose built propane/alternative fuel regulator.A heavy duty handle is a must for larger tips because of the increased flow rate, and whether it will mate to the rosebud gooseneck without all sorts of adapters. As I thought, and it was confirmed............3/8 hose is a very good idea.  Larger dia hose reduces backpressure and friction caused by the higher flow rates/pressure.  Just because you can push 20psi through a 1/4" hose doesn't guarantee that you are getting sufficient volume at the heating tip.  The tip may seem to operate properly, but starving it cuts your btu's.And, as I mentioned earlier, be sure to use T grade hoses.  Alternate fuels will attack acetylene only hoses.  I know people use them, but it's not recomended.  For a 1.50 per foot price it's cheap insurance. The heating tip relies on high flow volume for cooling.  If there is insufficient flow, you will get backfiring as the tip heats up.  There have been some posts from others relating to backfiring.  This info should solve the problem.  (I have encountered this problem with an acetylene rosebud due to my small 145cf acetylene bottle, it can only be resolved by manifolding mutliple fuel bottles).  You cannot starve these large heating tips.RE Victor cutting torches...............all but the Professional series are now made in China.  I did voice my opinion to the tech support people, and they thanked me for my inputSandy.........I won't know the procedure for aquiring an industrial exemption to the new safety valve until I go over and get the propane bottle filled.  LWS guy talked to propane guy, and just relayed the fact back to me.  However it is legal and a new exception.  DOT has also introduced some new exceptions for inspections on bottles. This is about as accurate a report I can come up with.  If anyone else is considering switching to propane for heavy heating applications I'd suggest you NOT take my word as the last word.  Check out the criteria appropriate for the equipment you own, or are planning to buy.  This has been a real headache for me, but it was worth it to insure that I'm getting the proper goodies to work with"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:If I think of it tomorrow Sam I'll get a pic of the setup at work. I'm sure all we have on ours is 3/8" hose and it'a lot bigger tip than that. You'll be thankful for the long neck when you start heating although with a short one it's a good way to get rid of those pesky nose hairs .As for the regulator, again I'm not saying it's right or correct but we use the one off our acetylene gear. For $7.00 for the correct one I'd go for it, cheap insurance.Wanna talk fun, the actual tip on ours screws off so you can change it, try using a torch and the tip loosens up and watch people scramble. Funny now but wasn't at the time. When you get a flashback and hear the nice, high pitched whistle you've got about 5 seconds to shut it off or it'll bend like a limp noodle.Don't forget to get the check valves if the torch doesn't already have them built into it.....Mike
Reply:Woops sorry farmersamm, caught the part about heat treating and missed the gooseneck trailer part, and thought with a forge you would get some carbon into it,Good post.

Reply:Denrep, did you mark those yourself or was it done by the fill place/LWS? I've still got 2 or 3 of those old cylinders so if its DIY I might just do that for my burner..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:We marked them in-house, per the wording for exemption allowed in NFPA Liqueified Petroleum Gas Code.I guess the rules can vary state to state. If you're buying gas at a retail fill station you may want to bring a print-out of the Gas Code with you.". . .exempt are cylinders used for industrial trucks, industrial welding and cutting gases (these cylinders must be labeled with their use)."From:http://www.nfpa.org/itemDetail.asp?c...ookie%5Ftest=1Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 12-11-2009 at 05:07 PM.

Reply:Samm, here's the pics of the rosebud we have at the shop and it is a 3/8" hose.....Mike Attached Images
Reply:Thanks for the pics Mike.  The broad width regular rosebud is HUGE  THERMONUCLEAR  The long gooseneck on mine makes sense now.It looks like the #20 I ordered, but it takes 2 months to get them (out of stock).  They sent the spot heating rosebud instead, thinking it might work out for what I'm doing.I see the paralegals at Denrep Consulting LLC have been at it again  Very dedicated bunch of dudes to dig through the law books, then gather evidence from the snowdrifts  Thanks man  Tell Alfred to be expecting a box of Havana's in the mail."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
