Reply:Actually, the older real helmets of that "New Yorker" style are made of steel with a leather covering. This method of construction was abandoned when polycarbonate became available. I wore both, and can say without hesitation, that the steel ones wore me out from just wearing them. They were incredibly heavy for headwear. That is a beautiful display piece. I'm sure you will be making more of them as soon as others see it.CharleyMiller MM252Miller Bobcat 225NTMiller DialArc HF / DIY Cooler2 Victor O/A TorchsetsMilwaukee 8" Metal SawMilwaukee Dry Cut "Chop" Saw 5 Ton Wallace Gantry Various Grinders, Benders, etc.

Reply:Definitely nice.      While this solid steel looking helmet looks heavy,  I agree with CharleyL about the New Yorkers being heavy!    Our original were all leather, but I think later versions they upgraded the inner cap part to steel, covered with leather, and they weighted a lot.   If you wore one for a 12-14 hour stretch on scene, you ended up with a real sore neck and wonderful headache,  which is probably as close to wearing a 'Pipeliner" welding helmet for a 8-12 hour shift I'd like to get.     Our New Yorkers were removed from service for not meeting NFPA standards (suspension lining ), and Cairn's I believe came up with an replacement for the style, called "Houston".   Unfortunately, the Houston's end up being real large, to accommodate the suspension gear and they were just as heavy.    The other wonderful part on the helmets were the flip down eyeshields, which after about 3-4 months were so scratched, smoke covered, and dirty you couldn't see anything, but then again, in a fire you couldn't see anything anyway.    Of course, the SCBA mask made those obsolete, except for rescue work, and then goggles worked a whole lot better there.     Cold, you ain't been cold until you've been fighting a fire when it's -20, the wind is howling, and water your spraying is blowing back at you as Ice Pellets.    What hasn't frozen, ends up on you as a layer of ice.    Worse frostbite I've ever had - toes, fingers, nose, lips.  Took 3 days and 40 gallons of coffee to warm up - after 12 hours in the hospital.  Fortunately, didn't lose nothing, some guys lost toes and finger tips.
Reply:The Sil-Bronze really 'Pops' that Hat!  Well DONE!!  You could sell a LOT of those to Firemen up here!  They make good 'coin' too, so they can afford it... Reply:Kaiser,Would you mind telling us a little about the materials and construction process?  It's a beautiful piece of art.  It looks like the only thing you had to acquire was the eagle/top cap piece?  You don't see things like that around much anymore.  It's obvious you took your time and put a lot of thought into that piece.  Where I live, you could make A LOT of money making those.  (I'm in a vacation destination/affluent retirement/second home kind of community with many retired law enforcement/fire fighters that would eat that stuff up).Miller Dynasty 200DXMillermatic 210 w/ Spoolmate 3035Hypertherm Powermax 380JD Squared Model 32Multiple fabrication tools & equipmentFull Powder Coating SetupYeah, I do think you could make some money selling these metal helmets - It does appear to be close to full size, based on the Eagle (front holder) and Shield?    A plan, materials list, etc?     Don't want to sound like I'd like to get into your great artistic work, but does seem to make nice gift for a retired firefighter.      I do like the contrast with the bronze brazing, but I'm sure someone would want to chrome the whole helmet, or the use of copper and silver solder sounds sharp too!    Lots of options - Don't think you could patent the idea however.   Good Luck!
Reply:I used to work in the sheet metal industry before getting on the fire department so I know a little about metal working, however, this was all done in my garage with limited tools working on it here and there. I have a Tig welder, HF saw, and other small tools. Materials are CRS sheet metal and bar and shield was polished brass that I had engraved.  The eagle on top was purchased along with the gold banding to go around edge. I have a hard time to put a price tag on it,considering the many hours of labor put into it. I'd be curious to know how much somebody would pay for it though.
Reply:I guess I'll start making another one and see about selling it. In the meantime I'll take the pictures down, but I will post with updates. Thank's for all the replies.
