Reply:Treadmills have pretty good variable speed motors. A friend of mine used one of the motors for a homemade  knife making beltsander/polisher.Last edited by jim_mas; 02-08-2011 at 06:19 PM.

Reply:me being an ol' retired crusher hand, i wonder if you could figger a way to splice some belts together, turn the drive pulley end for end, make some troughed slide beds and wind up with a conveyor to load gravel or other bulk material.                                          just a thought,                                                                 mikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I found one with a 2.6hp dc motor in it for $10.  I want to make a mount for my milling machine so I can have variable speed.  Some of the older ones have variable speed belt systems and open case low hp motors, I also found one of those for free, but I ended up just using the frame for projects and scraped the rest. There is no failure...only feedback
Reply:the belt sander would be night... anyone got any pics of treadmill contvered
Reply:A wide belt sander comes to mind. You have the rollers and the drive motor.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. You may pick two.Hobart AC/DC StikMate LXHarbor Freight AD HoodHarbor Freight Industrial Chop SawDeVilbis 20 Gallon, 5 HP Compressor

Reply:Variable speed d/c motor on my drill press works great . No more changing pulley and belt combo. You need the circuit board also.Google it many have done it,did mine about 5 yrs ago.Vinnie

Reply:About a year ago my doctor gave me a tread mill out of his clinic. I was more than happy to save it from the land fill. Scored a 2 HP 3-Phase Baldor motor with VFD, a Bison gear motor and a lot of other great hardware. Commercial/medical treadmills are built stout. The motor and vfd are going on my metal spinning lathe this week.
Reply:You can mount some blades on the motors and make a little windmill for the back yard or roof.... You could probably trickle charge a 12 volt battery with it. It would be a fun experiment. Get enought treadmill motors and you might be able to put yourself off the grid!!!! Theres videos on youtube on making blades out of 8 inch pvc tube or even slicing up 55 gallon drums. Check it out, theres some neat videos on there.Lincoln ac/dc 225/125Millermatic 211 w/ Spoolmatic 100Miller 330 a/bpDynasty 200 dx

Welding any round item.Just get the motor driven roller and non driven roller and make the non driven roller adjustable as far as distance from driven roller. Weld any size tank.Have to work out the grounding on the non driven roller or rollers.Last edited by Donald Branscom; 02-09-2011 at 07:20 PM.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:I grab up all the free treadmills I can and use the motors for converting things to infinite variable speed.  Here is an old Craftsman lathe I restored. The motor/jack shaft Depending on the treadmill you need to salvage a few different things.  Most consumer grade treadmills use a DC motor similar to what you see in the photos.  Besides the motor, you need to get the control circuit board and the choke coil is so equipped.  The speed control pot will either be a 5K ohm or more likely a 10K ohm slide so you you may or may not want to replace that with a rotary style.  I have also found some consumer grade units using a constant speed AC motor equipped with a variable ration pulley drive.  These are easy to spot as the treadmill speed control will be a multi turn knob affair.  Still worth scrounging for parts. The upscale Pro quality units in medical facilities and gyms tend to use a VFD and a DC drive as opposed to the pulse width modulated units in the lower classed machines.Besides the drive components, the rollers make good material feed stands and the frame work can be salvaged for some material.  The belts are silicone coated on the back side but do make good work bench top mats.  I don't recommend them as floor mats unless you can fasten them in place because they slide on concrete due to the silicone lube. Reply:I went and got one today newer Nordic track...it works but Simone moved it and cracked the frame so it's making the belt track right....might just have pull the crack togather and weld it up to turn a little profit....my wife thinks she needs to keep it lol

Reply:I have heard of guys building fighting robots with them. Personally I would go for a remote control lawn mower, maybe with tracks so I could cut the not so level land around here.Do not go where the path may lead, instead go where there is no path and leave a trail.
