So I have a few up coming welding projects / jobs that involve moveing steel plate . And it would be nice to have a plate clamp but there pricey. So I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to build my own . It's 1/8 plate and it's 8 ft long and 4 ft wide . I won't be lifting it I'll be kinda dragging it a couple of feet on to the trailer. I have some 1/2 steel plate that I was thinking of cutting up to make my plate clamp. ThanksMillermatic 211 with mvp plugs miller titanium series welding helmetstihl chain saws 8 ft welding table
Reply:Never used them. Any time had to move plate we just used a strong back clamp and a strap or wire rope choker.
Reply:A clamp like this https://www.armstrongtools.com/image...78_000-092.jpg
Reply:I don't think it's a good idea to build one. If you haven't, take a look at the jaws on a plate clamp, they are hardened steel so they bite into the plate and reduce the chance of slipping. Whatever you build will probably work fine for 1/8" but who's to say what it will be used to pick in the future. I agree w/ using a strong back clamp for the 1/8". Reply:1/8" is still sheet metal, IIRC it doesn't become plate until after 11 gauge. That said, a pair of vise grips will work just fine.
Reply:Vise grips or a good C-clamp will work fine for dragging. Get a proper plate clamp for hanging. My name's not Jim....
