Rerod sphere

I was at a home and garden show this weekend and one booth had spheres made out of small pieces of 3/8 rebar bent in curves and welded together. I mean it took hundreds of them.  Has anyone seen these or know how to make them?
Reply:I haven't seen that, but I know the suplier we used to get rebar from had a machine that bent rods for doing round columns and so on. They came as individual circles or long spirals, depending on what the job called for. They'd bend them to whatever diameter you wanted in whatever size rod you wanted, from 1/4" to over 1" in diameter rebar. All came out almost exactly the same. With something like that to start with it shouldn't be too hard to make a sphere..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:These speres were made up of a whole bunch of small curved pieces about 4" long welded together--kind of reminded me of a geometric dome, only alot more pieces.  The large spere they had was about 3 ft. tall.

Reply:Find something to bend the rebar around that is the diameter that you want minus 3/4". Bend four circles around it made of grade 2 rebar. Grade 2 is the softest and easiest to bend. Weld one circle complete. Cut the other circles in half minus twice the thickness of the rebar. Weld these to the whole circle until you have a sphere made of rebar. This is your die piece and gives you something to clamp your short pieces to make a good sphere shape.Any more questions, just ask away.
