China is a manufacturing giant.  I'll bet they make quality welders/cutters for their own industrial markets - especially their naval shipyards.  And if that's the case, then they should know how to make quality small welders/cutters for auto repair and industrial maintenance (in China).Does anyone know anything about these welders?  (I'm sure we're not talking about the "stuff" that is sold on eBay, haha!)ThanksTomPS.  NOTE:  Regarding Chinese crude steel consumption.  They produce almost 1/2 the world total of raw steel.  They export about 10% of it.. #2 is japan at about 1/5th that of China, but they export about 30% of theirs, then there is the US which is almost 1/10th that of China, we export about 10% of ours.Clearly, China is working with steel more than any other country on the earth.  Therefore, they should be at the forefront of welding technology - at least from a non-esoteric manufacturing perspective.  USA is still #1 when it comes to luna-hi-tech but then, we eventually give it to the Chinese anyway.  So I'm expecting the cheap imported Chinese welders to continually improve, soon to the point where they are at an acceptable level.  I suspect in China, everyone is "stealing" from everyone else with regard to tech and it will take a few layers of "quality diffusion" to reach the bottom feeders of economy exports. IGBT's sure showed up quick.PPS.  I just did an image search for "Chinese industrial welders" and wow the stuff I found.
Reply:China is very capable of making almost anything, with a very high quality. its just that the market for "cheap ****" is much bigger then the high end.its not a welding example, but take the iphone for example. whether you like apple or not, you must admit that the design, construction and finish of the iphone is supurb. they are made in china. (I have a samsung s2 btw - not a fanboy)It all comes down to what people want. if a company wants something made to a high quality in china, it can be done, it just costs more than the cheapo corner cutting ones (and then there is the issue of the same company making cheapo versions of your product, and selling it for cheap...)I don't know what welders they use in industry there, but I'd bet the brands aren't the big american (or other international ones). I'd put money on their own locally produced ones being used.
Reply:I posted this in your other thread, but it really belongs here-As far as what welding machines the chinese us- mostly they use transformer stick welders. really cheap, really simple. But both Lincoln and Miller have extensive sales networks in China, and sell plenty of tig and mig machines there.here is an article about Chinese pipeline welders using brand new, expensive, Lincoln STT machines-http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...-pipeline.aspxLincoln has factories in China as well, at least five of em.Here is a link to the products made at the Shanghai factory- you will notice they are mostly inverters.http://www.lincolnelectric.com.cn/en...i_products.htmmost of the big dog euro welding companies make or sell machines in china as well- so the high end of the market there is mostly foreign machines. The chinese tend to trust imported stuff more for expensive purchases- which is why China is the number one market worldwide for Rolls Royce, even though there is a chinese knockoff. In general, the chinese import billions of dollars of high end american and european and japanese machinery and tools for higher end processes. Haas, of Ventura Ca., sells around a hundred made in USA CNC machine tools a month to the chinese. The japanese and germans similarly sell them lots and lots of $300,000 milling machines and lathes. In most any manufacturing industry, the high end in China is using imported equipment- Trumpf laser punch presses, Italian knitting machines, German printing presses, Italian aspirin presses and cigarette packaging machines and tea bag making machines, John Deere and Caterpillar ag and contstruction equipment, Boeing airplanes, and on down the line. The chinese make lots of low and mid range equipment and machines- but they dont trust their own stuff when it comes to the high end, and they import. Ingersoll in Illinois sends 100' long spar mills over to china for their aerospace industry to make wings. Flow and Omax in the Seattle area send lots of CNC waterjet machines over there, at $200k to a million each. Cat has close to a dozen factories in China now, but the big, really expensive stuff still gets made here and sent there- the million dollar mining dump trucks, the biggest and best excavators or dozers or scrapers are all american. Same with Terex cranes, Peterbilt and Kenworth offroad trucks, and lots more. I would guess that if you are doing orbital tig welding of sanitary pipe in Chinese food factories, you are using japanese or german or US machines to do it. Chinese auto plants are using Kemppi machines.

Reply:Awesome Ries! One could say they are beating us with our own tools! One could also say we truely are in a World Economy too!  They do the Cheap Labor step - we do the Expensive Labor step.It even makes further sense:  they make all this import revenue from manufacturing so they need to spend that money.  What better way than to buy the High End from your customers. So there we have The Great Irony:  China is partly responsible for the advancement of Things High End in The West. Its like in Physics Prediction:  Pratt & Whitney has been doing computer simulations of what happens during a Bird Strike - when a jet engine ingests a bird.  Specific "strains" of high end finite element modeling software solve that problem.  However, the Gaming Industry is causing all the development in this area including PC evolution.  Of course having Virtual Reality fueling Actual Reality - THAT is really troublesome...Thanks all!Tom
Reply:I wish it was true that the Chinese only did cheap labor- but, unfortunately, they are trying very hard to change that. The Chinese government is paying money to move their manufacturing to a more technological level. When the big recession hit in 09, 100,000 (yes, one hundred thousand) toy and novelty factories in southern china went out of business. And the chinese government is not helping em start up again- that low wage, low skill work has moved to other countries- Vietnam, the Phillipines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and so on.The chinese government spent $52 billion last year alone just on renewable energy research- they are getting to be pretty advanced in things like coal gasification, large scale solar panel manufacturing, and other technologies that they will be selling to us soon enough- and they will make a whole lot more money than when they sell us plastic action figures and christmas tree ornaments. Sinopec, the chinese government company, is already building a $2.5 Billion coal gasification plant in Texas, because, at this point, they know more about it than we do. Of course the fact that they work cheaper helps too- but they will be hiring texan grunt workers, at texas wages, to do the actual work.http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...084423834.htmlIts true, when the Chinese spend $70 Billion this year alone on new railroads and rail stock, they are ordering locomotives from us- but if we dont keep up, technologically, eventually they will be building their own locos.I guess my point is- the Chinese arent standing still. In every field of manufacturing, they are pouring billions, or tens of billions, into R&D, particularly in higher tech, higher profit areas. We are not.We need to, to keep up. We are still the largest economy in the world, and we are still the leaders in many fields- but you cant stand still.
Reply:We need to put all the fat people (like me) on treadmills driving generators providing additional capacity to the electrical grid (!)China sees that Energy is the Resource that drives everything.  No Energy, No Nothing.Until your post, I was unaware that China was focusing its attention on renewable energy. What makes no sense to me is if Obama was trying to push renewable energy, why not make it clear that we are in a race with China to achieve it?  The reaction to him would be completely different.  Instead, our approach is like the little cartoon fairyland of the Prius where everyone skips down the road singing amidst the butterflies and flowers. But then Toyota is no dummy.  They have probably realized that here in the USA, we are basically chasing Unicorns.Oh, quick!  There's one over there....Tom

Reply:The Chinese bought up all the SA 200 Lincolns. That is why they are so hard to find here now.
Reply:We are getting off topic but this is most likely the result of no/insufficient refineries They import gasoline. A possible result of sanctions against them?
Reply:Farmall, I thenk he was meaning sanctions against Iran and why they have so many CNG vehicles.  And that is a correct assessment.  However it also makes them a leader in alternative fuel vehicles and less polluting.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:This global shifting is very fascinationing, for obvious reasons.I think part of the problem is the general public isn't informed, or is mis-informed on many levels, thanks to our "news" that is bought and paid for.And the fact that some are more interested in their zoomba classes than what's going on.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:I saw that they use a lot of Aotai welders. Great quality welders. They don't export much. I saw that long**** had their welder for sale, I think it's called Microtig. My friend have their 500amp digital pulsed mig for few years now. It is used 8hr/day and It works great. He bought it directly from factory.I just hate that importers says that they designed new welder, the only thing they do is that they change colours or housing. I know the manufacturer for almost every imported machine, some are good, but they are often unreliable quality. I actually own dc digital chinese welder from JLT http://www.jltwelding.com/ . It's great and it beats some well known manufacturers. I bought it, because I know the owner and serviceman of a shop where they are sold.Last edited by ravselj; 11-03-2012 at 02:08 PM.
