First off, I haven't done much of any gas welding in 30 plus years.  Now here is my question:I am putting in a 48 GMC dash in a street rod I am building, the dash was cut and  tacked in using butt clamps witch give me about 1/16 to 3/32 gap. The material is 16 ga.  My question is, I want to hammer weld with gas.  What size tip, rod and pressure should I use to accomplish this feat?  Since I have never attempted this, how long do I have before I take the hammer and dolly to it.Thanks for any help from this old retired wanna be welder
Reply:Try No 2, neutral flame, balance your torch out for pressure. You want to get in their as soon as possible, your going to need a freind to hold the torch, gas weld about an inch and then hammer weld on dolly the still hot weld, reheat if you have to then continue, normalizing as you go along.Their is no big urgency if you don't get in their and make the weld flush, just reheat to dull red and continue Then with a pick and small body file make sure all is level. This is not part of unitized construction so fears about damaging metal grain by overheating aren't warranted.Just have fun with it.Might want to practice on some scrap first.
