My trusty rusty old Fisher 9' plow (94 vintage) has more holes in the front than good metal so rather then start welding a dozen patches on it, I decided to re-skin the front. I had a new piece cut and rolled so it was a perfect fit. The plow weighs a ton as it is so I did not wish to just add the new face over the old rot so I started cutting the old face off. This is proving to be more of a challange then I anticipated. 5 hours and only 2/3rds there. Perhaps I should have just delt with the extra weight. I know that once the old one is off the new will be a piece of cake but whew, that's a lot of work. Still, it is cheaper then a new plow.
Reply:Know what you mean. My 9' Fisher will need a new skin soon. The snow foil is in worse shape though and will need some attention before the season starts. It's getting towards time all that needs to get addressed. Probably drag it over to the shop and work on it around Thanksgiving the way things look right now. What did the new skin cost you?.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:The foil on mine is in tough shape also but I no longer use this plow for road work, just my own driveway so I might just leave it off. I don't remember what it cost as I paid cash and it's been standing in the corner for over a year. It was not expensive. Stock plus cut and roll fee.I started by trying to cut through the welds on the back side and taking it off in small chunks. That was just pissing me off. So I shifted gears and located the welds on the front and drew circles around them, then cut the circles with my plasma cutter. Then it started moving much faster. With the bulk of the old skin out of the way, the small parts left behind are much easier to deal with. There is about twice as many welds holding that face on then I anticipated. So be forwarned

Reply:It is a $hit job plain and simple, a 3 foot torch, screw dogs and a BFH are your friend. I did a TD-7 dozer reskin in less time than an 8' Fisher blade.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:"Screw dogs (I call them jacks) are a HUGE time saver. They'll do what a clamp won't & when you're done, just cut the tacks off & hit it with a grinder. Good to go."Thick head here......can you 'splain it better?

Reply:So many projects with so little time. I just finished tacking this up. I had to make some threaded J hooks and drill a bunch of holes in the face so that I could suck this up tight to the ribs. I won't do this job again. I'm sure there's a cheap used plow someplace and I should have explored that route first. It did come out nice. Just a lot of work.
